Gameplay, Redux
After playing the entire game through on Solid Normal mode, I realized the game hadn't lived up to its full potential, and it was my fault. I played it more like a shooter than a sneaker. So I decided to give it another go, playing Snake as he was meant to be played, this time in Big Boss Extreme mode.
What a difference! The beginning of the game, before you get the Solid Eye, felt more like on-the-job training than Call of Duty the second time around. Playing the game how it was meant to be played, I actually honed my sneaking and close quarter combat (CQC) skills early on. I took great pleasure in holding baddies hostage, shooting their friends, slitting their throat, and stuffing them in the nearest locker... luring them with nudie-mags, choking 'em out, and shooting 'em in the head... I could go on...
This is MGS. And it is wonderful. Also... difficult. Who'da thunk that the hardest mode would actually be a challenge? I haven't gotten very far into my second play-through yet, but I'm already having a lot more fun exploring levels and finding creative ways to kill the enemy soldiers. I'm not really the type to sneak through the entire game without killing anyone at all (maybe on the third go-round), but killing with creative license is good wholesome fun!
The thing I mentioned before about saves only going up to your most recent checkpoint does become a bit more frustrating when you're taking your time between those checkpoints. The ability to save exactly where you are would be a welcome change, but I'll live.
