Introduction
Metal Gear Solid 4 (MGS4) is the first and only title that I've been compelled to purchase for my PS3 so far. It's not that I haven't played any other PS3 games, I've rented a bunch in fact, but I never felt like I needed to own any of them...
[Heavenly Sword was a sort of sexualized button-masher, and it was a lot of fun for what it was - a rental. MotorStorm was one of the worst driving games I've ever played. Grand Theft Auto IV, well, that's also available for the Xbox 360 (which has way more decent games to choose from, in my opinion), so I got that one on the XB360. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was mildly entertaining, with good graphics and not-quite-all-there AI - it was certainly better than Tomb Raider: Legend, which was so bad it was offensive. But I digress...]
I expect a lot of fans of the series feel the same as me - unlike all of the aforementioned games, MGS4 is something that you just sort of have to buy.
Before MGS4 hit the shelves, a flurry of gameplay videos hit the web, and I couldn't help but watch a couple of them. These videos left me deeply worried about the game. Reservedly excited, you might say.
The thing that really had me worried was that it seemed the formula might have been modified a bit too much - elements I had loved so much in the previous titles didn't seem to be there anymore. In a way, it just looked a bit like Call of Duty meets Splinter Cell, with some Metal Gear Solid rainbow sprinkles on top.
So, after playing the game all the way through (and then some), were my reservations justified?
