Introduction
Nikon today announced the D90 Digital SLR - successor to the D80. It's slated for availability some time (late?) September, at an ESP (estimated street price) of $999.95. You can pre-order one as of today from the likes of BHPhotoVideo and Calumet, though the latter has it listed a full four cents higher than Nikon's ESP - imagine that.
At this point, I should mention that I'm a Canon user. I love my 5D and my treasure chest full of expensive L lenses. Point being, I'm so happy with Canon that it's rare for me to get excited about anything from the Nikon camp. In fact, this is the first time my eyes have wandered. [Forgive me, Canon, 'tis but a fling.]
So what is it that could possibly get me so interested in this new offering from Nikon? Well, it looks like a pretty decent camera overall, but it has nothing to do with megapixels, big super-dense live-view-capable LCDs, or self-cleaning sensors... None of those things could ever tempt me to abandon my 5D. The D90's packing something no other DSLR has ever had before: freaking... movies... from a DSLR. It's like... a DSLR'corder. Now, I'm still not giving up my 5D, but the D90 is going to get a lot of attention, and may usher in a whole new subset of photographers. This camera may just mean the end of the high-end point-n-shoot.
