I get the feeling after playing this game that they weren't really interested in making a new game, they wanted to remake the first, only prettier, easier, and less terrifying. You know, for that rich cross-platform market.

And if I'm not beating a dead horse yet, this game is cross-platform. I'd love to catch up on all the moderately-plausible backstory through the intel you find laying around if you're curious and kinda want to get scared by checking in every corner even though you're smart enough not to, but I skipped most of it because that interface sucks. It's like being forced to type with a numpad like you're texting even though you've got a keyboard right there. OK, so that's pretty much the only console holdover but it drives home the point that they weren't out to make something new, they were really after expanding their sales.

What's frightening to me the most is that this game expertly crafts each of its parts, but never puts them together. To make matters worse, the ending? It ellipses...

Overall (Metacritic) rating, 3/5:You're going to find what you want in this game, but it's never going to really draw what they want from you. You want a dark narrative? It's there for the reading. You want a chance to kill faceless, cloned, psychic super-soldiers? They're right there, with their backs facing you. You want things flying at you from the shadows? Look into the shadows. All the components are present, but they're never overwhelming, no matter how fun or perfectly they're designed. Doesn't that defeat the point?

Immersion, 3/5: by making all the parts of the game separate, they're easy to deal with. The plot's not going to make you want to find out why or what's next and there's ammo everywhere. The polish is astounding, though, and it's quite enough to make you want to keep going.

Originality, 2/5: Fear 2 isn't so much a sequel as it is a re-shoot of Fear. If you haven't played the original, you'll think this game was new and different. If you have, it's not going to tell you much more about what you already know.

Replayability, 2/5: by itself, I'd say the game wasn't replayable at all. You might find a scrap of intel or forget an ambush, but having any insight on what happens next will take away all the suspense. There's some multiplayer action in there to give the game a little more staying power.
