Archos Generation 5 Launch

Michael covered Archos' Generation 5 launch event in NYC last week, and the new Archos 605 was the rockstar of the show. The real question is, does the 605 seem ill-featured or me-too? Despite some initial missteps with the UI, the lack of an out-of-the-box browser and frustration that the company joins the throngs of people telling me to pay more money for content I've already bought, I think the Archos 605 is a strong entry into the market. If I didn't have anything that plays video, and especially if I was in the same situation and looking to replace my iPod, I'd definitely be buying. And if you're willing to commit, the combination of the 605 with the DVR dock and TV Plus makes for a remarkably complete media ecosystem. Which could make lazy people like me very happy.

WWDC 2007 Keynote Analysis

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference kicked off in San Francisco today, beginning with the highly anticipated Steve Jobs keynote speech. Apple fans have been waiting for this day since MacWorld San Francisco back in January. Steve Jobs covered four different topics during his keynote "“ Gaming, OS X 10.5 Leopard, the iPhone and Safari. I'll discuss the various announcements and separate the compelling features from the shiny new fluff.

One of the press-only events we attended at CES is PEPCOM's Digital Experience. We've already posted countless Spotlight articles from this event, but in this article we will discuss some of the products that we didn't feel warranted their own article.
Canon HV-10 HDV Camcorder

It shouldn't shock anyone to hear that a company like Canon is making tiny high-definition camcorders. It's not as if HD and minuscule devices are surprising technology any more. It's another thing to hold a 1080p, 24fps (30fps @1080i) camcorder that you're afraid to accidentally inhale. Probably the most impressive is the $1300 price tag. Still not quite in the stocking stuffer range, but a whole lot less than the semi-professional league of video cameras.

NVIDIA SideShow Remotes

On the first day of the pre-CES events, NVIDIA purchased the mobile device semiconductor company PortalPlayer, and at least the CES crew was surprised, because their press info was "re-branded" with masking tape and Sharpied "NVIDIA" and "GoForce" right over PortalPlayer. For the most part, this means that NVIDIA will now be heavily involved with mobile graphics, in say, cell phones and PDAs. But they were showing some Vista hardware at their booth, not phones.

Linksys NAS200 (2x HD) Network Attached Storage

Drifting over to Linksys I discovered one of their new products aimed at the home storage market. Like many companies, Linksys had decided to release a NAS device. Unlike larger products which can hold 4 separate drives, the NAS200 sports space for 2 drives. Although this limits its storage, it also reduces its price. This is targeting the storage needy, but cost conscious consumer. The unit sports 2 SATA drive bays which are accessed by removable doors at the rear of the device. The NAS200 can be configured to use RAID 0, 1, JBOD, or each drive separately.

Cowon Q5, D2 and A3 Digital Media Players

Under the spotlight were the Cowon Q5, D2 and A3. The Q5 and D2 are both portable media players with impressive 5" and 4" screens, respectively. Each houses a 30 GB hard drive and a host of video playback formats. Rich and I played around with some of the movies they had pre-loaded and for the most part they looked pretty good. One of the A3s had a bit of a problem displaying Spiderman 2 and was quite jittery, but that could have been the file itself as other A3 displays had no problems.

Logitech Harmony 1000 Universal Touchscreen Remote

Logitech announced here at CES their top of the line remote control for your home theater. Sporting a touchscreen along with buttons on the right side of the unit, the Harmony 1000 is the king of the hill when it comes to universal remotes. Just like other Harmony remotes, you start by plugging it into your computer and telling the software what type of devices you have. A Samsung TV, Harmon Kardon Receiver, LG HD-DVD/Bluray disc player? The software tells the device what IR or RF codes to use to talk to the devices and then you're off and running.

The M604 is the external speaker system which was designed for the new Zune. It utilizes features that Altec Lansing has made popular with its iPod product line, but has enabled their use for the Zune. This unit will set you back $199.95.

We dropped by Skullcandy's booth again this year. While they may not have top-of-the-line headphones, they are still pretty good, look great and hell, they have a badass name. How could you not like headphones with "Skullcandy" printed on them? Last year they were kind enough to give us a couple pairs of headphones to try out during CES, so I was hoping to get my hands on another pair or two this year but unfortunately the new items they did have had to make their way to another event after CES. If I have time, I will however, try to get my hands on their MP3 watches, which however are new for this year's CES.

Editorial: AMD Launches DTX Form-Factor Initiative

What came as a surprise when talking to AMD is their new motherboard form factor project. Now, hear me out, this is very relative. AMD doesn't have the mass that Intel does when it comes to establishing a form factor. And why would they need to? What's in it for AMD? In a way, nothing. They're trying to make motherboards cheaper. The PCB that motherboards are stamped into can be very expensive, and more importantly, limited in supply. In the past couple of years, there have been several PCB shortages that forced motherboard production bottlenecks.
