Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Sound Isolating Earphones

The super.fi 5 Pros are the best-of-the-best headphones in Ultimate Ears' super.fi range. You're getting into pretty serious territory when your headphones start sporting two drivers per ear, and barring Apple's still unreleased set, it's nigh impossible to find a set that retail below 200 dollars. A couple of months ago, I couldn't have told you this kind of headphone existed, or why. But, in my newly enlightened state, I'll try to tell you a bit about the super.fi 5 pros with some authority.

Sennheiser HD 595 Headphones

I've been covering in-ear monitors lately, but it's time to change pace for a set of full-fledged, open, over-the-ear cans. This time around I'll be jamming with Sennheiser's HD 595, which sits in the middle of their audiophile headphone line. Ah, the classic scene of powering on your Hi-Fi system in the living room, dimming the lights, tossing on a pair of huge headphones, and settling into your favorite easy chair with a glass of Glenlivet 25, neat. My modern equivalent involves my iMac, a desk chair, and a Lone Star tall boy. Not quite as classy, but the phones I'm sporting spruce the picture up a bit.

Etymotic ER-4 microPro Sound Isolating Earphones

The ER-4Ps are excellent at reproducing accurate sound from a recording. If you are listening to sub-par source material, you'll know it. With a great recording, you'll be inundated with all of the sounds that the producers wanted you to hear. I didn't find any part of the audio range that was lacking. It was a treat to experience my music collection with that full-range, emphatically detailed sound that comes from this set of headphones. And you don't hear anything else, thanks to the superb isolation that Etymotic has accomplished with the ER-4Ps.

Monster Beats Headphones by Dr. Dre

As you can probably guess from the rather interesting name, Monster teamed up with Dr. Dre to get some celebrity name recognition for this new offering. I'm not so sure Dr. Dre would be the first person to pop into mind when thinking of audiophile priced headphones, but he is in the recording industry and should be instantly recognizable to anyone slightly familiar with the Rap/Hip-Hop scene nonetheless. Let's get past the names involved here, though, and see if the Beats are truly worthy of your hard-earned cash.

Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 4 Sound Isolating Earphones

The super.fi 4's really ended up winning me over because the whole package was spot on for what I look for in a set of headphones. Ultimate Ears nailed the styling for me with an attractive, minimalist design. Comfort is paramount for anyone looking to put some serious hours into his or her phones, and there's definitely a bunch of upside to be found with this set. I loved the soft, supple ear tips, and the low weight encouraged me to pass my Shures on to a new owner. The build quality felt solid throughout, and you get a two-year warranty from Ultimate Ears. The sound quality is very well rounded, easily equaling other phones of this level that I have had experience with. I don't mind dealing with the few issues I found because the super.fi 4's have so much going for them. Ultimate Ears also offers an iPhone-friendly set with an inline mic and control button for about $20 more, which may deal with the cable length issue for some.

Turtle Beach EarForce X4 XBOX 360 Wireless Headset

Turtle Beach's X4 wireless gaming headset is a great way to tap the enormous console market. Wireless headset? Playing video games in the living room at night without bothering anyone? Sign me up! Wirelessness isn't the best thing for audiophiles, but gamers [and perhaps more importantly, the people around them] are willing to sacrifice some things for a little convenience. Honestly, what's a little signal noise against a backdrop of orchestral gunfire. On top of that, the competition is a little weak. The mic that comes with the 360 is uncomfortable, ugly, and above all, it isn't a headset. It's got one Walkman-class scratchy plastic earphone with limited flexibility and added discomfort to make you avoid online gaming. Turtle Beach, with all their experience and wisdom, is right to make a quality headset that not only slides right into place with a 360, but also any other analog input you care to sport around your ears. This isn't their first set of 360 cans, so the X4s have big shoes to fill.

Audio-Technica ATH-CK7 Canal Headphones

So, are they truly studio-quality? Eh, if you had a studio you wouldn't put up with the sweepingly uneven amplification. You can compensate for it, and get some very impressive sound from these ATH-CK7s--rolls off the tongue, don't it?--but then they're going to be tied to whatever device you've got them plugged into. I can't use these with both my media player and my PC, because once I switch from my PC speakers, I have to reset my equalizer. And they would be a total waste if my media player didn't have a multi-band, customizable equalizer. There's no preset in the world that can correct for these babies.

Sennheiser PXC 450 Headphones

Sennheiser creates some of the best audiophile headphones you can buy, but they also manufacture professional headsets for the aviation industry that feature an active noise-canceling technology dubbed NoiseGard. Today we'll take a look at a pair of their high-end consumer headphones, the PXC 450, that includes the same NoiseGard technology as used in some of the professional aviation models.

Future Sonics Atrio Canalphones

If you're in the market for a decent set of earphones (or canalphones) and have done a bit of research, you have likely heard a thing or two about Future Sonics' Atrio series canalphones. Doing a quick Google search, skimming Future Sonics' website, or even consulting the handy-dandy "reviewer's guide" they sent me reveals quite a bit of hype surrounding these particular canalphones. Future Sonics even quotes several award-winning producers, composers and artists exclaiming their profound love of the Atrio. Now, I would be concerned about a company who didn't hype their product, but everything I've heard about these canalphones leads me to believe they were crafted by Jesus himself! I couldn't wait to hear the heavenly tones of my favorite music being reproduced by these babies! Did these canalphones live up to the hype, especially with so many big names backing them up? Let's see how I felt after a month of usage, while comparing them to several other canalphones ranging from the bargain to the big-ticket...

SteelSeries 3H Gaming Headset

Like Razer, now that the SteelSeries brand is something that can be leveraged within the gaming community, they're branching out and offering more gaming related products. Today we'll be taking a look at one of those products, the SteelSeries 3H Gaming Headset. The 3H is actually only one of a number of different gaming headsets offered by SteelSeries, and aside from their in-ear model, it's their most compact and inexpensive offering to-date. Let's take a closer look and see if the 3H can compete in the crowded budget segment and offer good value for the money.

Like most products beginning with a lower case "i," the iCans are meant to be associated with the iPod, and primarily intended for use with similar portable media players. The primary selling points seem to be (in no particular order) portability, style, and sound quality. Let's see how well the iCans live up to their strong heritage and meet their apparent design objectives!

Headphones. Some like them big, some like small, some people want noise-canceling and some want wireless. Wait! wireless? Yes! Altec Lansing AHP612 Wireless Studio Headphones to be exact. While not exactly portable in the taking-the-bus-to-work sense, they promise to let you roam free of wires when home.
Razer Barracuda HP-1 Surround Headphones

While Razer is well known for their gaming mice and related accessories, they are just now beginning to diversify their product line, while still remaining true to their motto, "for gamers, by gamers." The Barracuda is the first product by Razer that isn't a mouse or mouse accessory so it's definitely new territory for them. These headphones are actually only one half of the audio solution that Razer hopes gamers will buy into. These headphones sport surround sound a nifty boom mic, but are these really the ultimate headphones for gamers? We'll see...

Ultrasone PROline 650 Headphones

The product we'll be discussing comes from a company named Ultrasone that many of us are probably not all that familiar with. There are a couple reasons why you may not have heard of Ultrasone before. First of all they're based in Germany, and since they were founded in 1991, they're also fairly new as well. Ultrasone's focus has primarily been on providing high-end headphones to professionals in the music industry, so most of their products are priced higher than what most the average person would be willing to pay for headphones. The PROline 650 headphones that we'll be looking at today aren't what I'd consider "cheap" at $300, but let's take a closer look and see if they're really worth it.
