Spotlight: Sling Media SlingCatcher & SlingBox

Sling Media had one new piece of hardware to demo at CES 2007, called the SlingCatcher. It is a box that will output the streams from other Slingboxes from across the Internet and display them on your TV. It also can stream content from PCs. While this might not be a direct competitor to Apple's iTV and Netgear's Digital Entertainer HD, it still competes in the same space, in the same price range.

This evening at the Pepcom Digital Experience Belkin introduced the TuneStudio for the 5th gen iPod video. TuneSudio is a 4 channel mixer that allows you to mix and record high quality music and voice directly to an iPod. Users will be able to record up to 4 different audio sources (microphones, instruments, auxillary sound input) to create increased production value tracks.
The X52 Pro is fully interactive and can actually control aspects of the game. For example, you can set the MFD to act as your flight check list, altitude and fuel monitoring or pretty much any other off screen virtual read outs that you would otherwise need to use the hat switch to see. The X52 Pro is fully integrated with MS Flight Sim X and is a must have for flight sim enthusiasts.

Spotlight: Windows Home Server

First it's based off of Windows Vista, so the baseline functionality that you get with Vista will be included. Also, up to 10 computers will be able to connect to the server. There are some really neat features that make Windows Home Server a really feature rich operating system. First, it backs up your PCs around the house - using incremental backups to allow users to copy out individual files or the entire PC. The hardware has USB ports so not only can you back the data up to the Home Server, you can push it out to external drives. Microsoft says that it will allow the user to "rewind" a system back to when it was working better. That sounds awfully familiar, almost like you had a machine to go back in time (for the uninitiated, that's a jab at MS for stealing another Apple idea).

CES Unveiled

CES Unveiled is a CES press event that allows! well, press, to get a preview of some of the hottest items to be on display during CES. With over 80 exhibiting, we were able to check out some interesting products and talk to companies in a slightly less hectic atmosphere than on the actual showfloor come Monday. We have already posted several Spotlight articles covering the most interesting gadgets, doodads and even some really cool software applications. You can check out these articles and much more in our extensive Pre-CES Coverage. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to cover each company and product in-depth, so here is our coverage of some of the companies whose products didn't make it into our Spotlight articles.

This morning Kurtis and I attended Pioneer's "sound.vision.soul" press conference. Our hopes were set high by the Pioneer rep who made promises of exciting and exclusive Pioneer news. After taking our seats and waiting for 15 minutes past the 9 am start time, the lights dimmed and Ken Shioda, Pioneer's general manager of product planning for plasma displays, introduced the company's latest display technology.

Spotlight: Seemless S-XGen Ultra Mobile PC

As with every other CES we've attended, we ran across yet another PDA-laptop hybrid attempting to place the power of a computer in the palm of your hand. This time around, Seemless was showing off their S-XGen "Next Generation Ultra Mobile PC.' The S-XGen weighs about 14 ounces and measures 6" x 4" x 1.25". It is larger than a PDA and barely fits in one hand, but it is more compact than similar products we've seen in the past. One thing that immediately stood out was the fold-away keyboard. The large (albeit not full-size) keyboard makes typing much easier, although the keys are a little more awkward to press than your average laptop keys.

At CES Unveiled, we ran across a rather interesting piece of software from Bamboo Technology. They were showing off their recently released Vault 360 Platinum software which is the latest addition to their Vault product line. The Vault 360 is basically a central hub that converts and transfers music, movies and pictures to and from a wide array of portable devices such as smartphones, cameras, PDAs, MP3 players (even the iPod) and more.

Spotlight: Vantage Point Evo Wall Furniture

The Evo isn't just furniture, as it is also a cable management system with several accessories for A/V trays, wire conduits, speaker and flat-panel mounts, glass desktops and shelves and projector mounts. What makes it neat is how modular it all works. It's essentially a rack or frame that is concealed by wood panels, and they have a stack of finishes to go with your décor. Because the panels are wood, they can be easily modified for anything that you want flush with the surface. They really do have a sense for function, as corkboard and dry erase panels are other options. There's at least two and a half inches of space behind all the panels, and the rep said it's no problem to fit things like power strips to along with your tangled mess of wires.

Spotlight: Niveus Media Center PCs

Niveus was demonstrating their Rainer edition Media Center at CES Unveiled. Running Windows Vista, the unit had TV tuners capable of PVR functionally for both SD and over-the-air HDTV (antenna and good reception required for OTA HDTV). The unit also sported an HD-DVD drive to watch HD-DVDs in 1080P over HDMI or VGA. Other features included SPDIF out for audio (supporting up to 7.1), two USB ports and a Firewire port, FM audio input and RS-232 and IR Blaster ports to control other devices from the unit. It's a very impressive unit, however the price is steep, starting at $3500 for a base model and going up from there.

The Hitachi booth showed off their brand new terabyte drives. That's right 1000 GBs! Their new Deskstar 7K1000 and CinemaStar drives were presented in all their disemboweled glory. Interestingly enough, they still look like every other hard drive they have produced, but with 1 TB of space. The new drives will be produced with either SATA II 3.0 Gb/s interfaces or the older PATA. The drives feature a 5 platter design with 10 recording heads using a 32 MB cache. The price for these drives which should be available in the first quarter of 2007 will be at $399.

Spotlight: Digital Freedom

Some of the organizations which have joined this fight are the likes of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Media Access Project, Computer and Communications Industry Association, and CEA.
None of us had heard of Addlogix, but their rep ambushed us when we weren't really paying attention. Addlogix's Echo View FM PC2TV is a wireless device that allows users to easily transmit video content from their laptops or desktops to a TV. As more and more users watch videos from Youtube, iTunes and other online sources, Addlogix is hoping to simplify the process with their 802.11g wireless receiver.
