Introduction

Not too long ago, Brad took a look at JetAudio's iAudio4, also known as the CW400. Up until recently JetAudio has only produced flash memory-based MP3 players like the iAudio4, but with the wave of hard drive-based players flooding the market JetAudio introduced the M3.

The iAudio M3 is a 20GB MP3/OGG/WMA/WAV player, FM tuner/recorder, voice recorder, and USB mass storage device. It also sports a Line-In and a Line-Out input jack. What sets the M3 apart from the rest is its size. This is currently the smallest and most light-weight HDD-based player in its class. JetAudio was able to make such a small player by completely removing the LCD from the player and integrating it into a wired remote. This makes the remote vital for many of the player's functions, but that doesn't mean you need the remote for basic use. Enough yapping, let's get on to the good stuff!

that looks pretty nice! some decent headphones and rechargable batteries and I wouldn't mind picking one of them up!

My old panasonic cd player's feeling a bit neglected these days.. I'm driving in to work so I have no reason to use it....

2 - Posted by Kurtis on August 19, 2004 - 9:21 pm

the player doesnt use like AA batteries or anything, it's a battery that you don't remove, and its rechargeable

3 - Posted by Rich on August 20, 2004 - 8:29 am

So what happens when the rechargable battery won't recharge anymore ala PDA?

4 - Posted by handrail on August 20, 2004 - 9:40 am

the iPods had that problem with the batteries too. kept dying, wouldn't recharge. you can buy new ones and replace them yourself from various mac parts sellers.

now, for the jetaudio stuff, no idea.

The shell is held together by a few small screws. I bet the customer is physically able to replace the battery, and I would think JetAudio would send a new one. Will be good to check up on. I'll tell Kurtis to get some info from JetAudio on that.

Looks good indeed.

I'd consider the microphone on the player as opposed to on the remote, and absence of line in, a major inconvenience for people wanting to perform live digital stereo recordings. Doesn't the microphone pick hard drive humming and head movement noises up? That'd be rather catastrophic, for quiet music recording!

I'll wait until JetAudio revise their design. However, I am definitely interested to replace my crappy Archos Jukebox recorder (not built for lasting, that one, I can tell you now! Looks and feels like real junk, and guess what... It is exactly that) with something a tad more reliable and quiet, if digital recording is present and well behaved on the new unit...

actually regarding battery replacement - i know ipods had an enormous issue with this... (very expensive replacement batteries etc.)

I just got off the phone a second ago with Mr. Kang who is with JetAudio. He says that right now they don't have anything set in stone as far as policy regarding battery replacement goes, as this issue hasn't come up yet (the m3 is very new, so this problem likely won't occur for anyone for quite some time). But, he says that tentatively, they will charge $50, INCLUDING shipping, to have the M3 sent to them for a battery to be replaced. Basically he said that they don't want to try to make money off of the battery replacement as Apple did with the iPods.

Hope that answers the question :P

Is it possible to record from the FM tuner? I'm definitely interesting in buying this player, but I'd like to know that before I try.

9 - Posted by Sam_F on October 13, 2004 - 8:55 pm

OK, this thing seemed to good to be true [except that I never heard of iAudio before today - found it a Fry's Electronics], UNTIL I found that it has no mic input.

I agree with the person above that even tho the hard drive may be 'quiet' how is the internal mic going to pick up any sound at a distance at any sort of quality while it is in your pocket or clipped on your belt?

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF YOU CAN USE THE LINE IN TO PLUG IN AN EXTERNAL MIC?

My specific need is that I am a government attorney and I record all of my court cases (10 - 30 per day). I now use a laptop PC, and it is a pain to setup/tear down, etc. Thought a good quality voice recorder would do nicely, but not one, with the possible exception of the Olympus DM-20, has the features I need, such as remote operation to start/stop separate recordings, and an external mic to pickup everything that the judge might say.

Also, who the heck IS JetAudio / iAudio? Do they make their own equipment? Were they another company in a previously life?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks...

hi, i am seriously considering buying an i audio m3, but i am concerned about the life of the remote, how long will a remote last for? i have read reviews from people who have bought the i audio m3 and a large majority of them have had their remotes die within a few days of usuage. thanks

11 - Posted by Nelg on November 3, 2004 - 9:41 pm

I have read some reviews about the M3, and many people complained about the lack of ID3 support while organizing the songs.
As far as I know, ID3 is the album and genre (I think) of the song, so does this mean you can't organize songs by the album/genre its from? Organizing by genre isnt a big thing to me, but organizing by albums is. Is it possible to have folders and subfolders? For example, say I wanted to have folders for Metallica and Led Zeppelin, and have subfolders for each of their albums. If you can't do this, can you just make a whole bunch of playlists, then put the songs from each album in different playlists?

If you could clear up this thing with the ID3 organizing by saying what the M3/M3L can and cannot do, it would help a lot, thanks.

hi again, i also would like to know if the i audio m3, automatically separates tracks after they have been up loaded via the line in. i have an xbox which runs through the AUX, and i would like to upload my songs from the xbox to the M3, but i do not want to have to manually separate them. is it possible to do this? will the folders that the songs are in on my xbox remain the same when i transfer files to the M3? thanks

13 - Posted by hokaido on November 4, 2004 - 12:22 pm

ok i see, but i don't have a computer. if i was to start playing a track by an artist and i pressed record to make it copy, and then after the song was finished i pressed stop. would the M3 recognise that the track was finished and place it in the folder? also can you make directories using the remote or do you need to have a computer to do so? i have hundreds of music files on my xbox, and i would idealy like to have the current folders on the xbox with their file contents on the m3. thanks

I bought the mp3 player for my Son a few weeks ago for his bithday. He says it is brilliant! Robust, great sound especially with the Shure e2c's earphones. One question he has asked is "Can the power charger be used in EEC countries to charge the player as they use 220-240 V instead of 120V"?

15 - Posted by Guest on November 10, 2004 - 3:34 pm

Hi, how's M3's support for mutli-launage. Not only the control menu but also the title, artist and so on. Have you tried to show different launage on the screen. Thanks a lot. Jeff

16 - Posted by Guest on November 10, 2004 - 5:47 pm

It should say what voltage the charger can accept on the charger itself. Should be in the text in this pic:

http://www.thetechlounge.com/reviews/jetaudio_iaud...

And you would need an adapter in order to plug it in other countries I'm sure.

17 - Posted by Lea on November 11, 2004 - 1:17 am

Kurtis - thx for your reply. Do they just mean an adaptor so that the charger can connect into the EEC power supply (like one would take with on vacation to a foreign country) or are they saying that the charger is incompatible because of the voltage supplies and a new charger would be required. In other words 220-240 V input is ok (or not).

18 - Posted by Guest on November 11, 2004 - 6:18 am

Oh no, here we go again! Another tech toy that doesn't live up to expectations. Here's a brief account of my experience with an iAudio M3. First off, I really liked it despite some of its known shortcomings. I was very enthusiastic with my purchase because it included a few important features that none of the other devices have, including Apple's iPod. However, since purchasing it 2 weeks ago its locked up about 3 or 4 times (the 'Reset' function worked everytime until today.) All I get now ia a "scan" line on the LCD remote (backlight no longer works.) Although it still shows up as a hard disk via USB it simply doesn't boot up with or without the remote. BTW, latest firmware updates were installed & working on day 2. BIG BUMMER.

What are the shuffle play options? Can I select a particular folder/file or will it only shuffle the entire player?

Is there a sync option so that if I add additional music files to my M3 folder on my computer only the new files will be copied to the player when the entire folder is dragged to the M3 disk icon?

20 - Posted by Guest on November 26, 2004 - 7:03 pm

when you are downloading firmware, you only need to download the latest version, right?

21 - Posted by korn1335 on November 27, 2004 - 11:33 pm

I was wornding if this player supports text files and exe files

22 - Posted by Guest on November 28, 2004 - 11:24 am

My requirement is to have a player full of voice recordings and to be able to flag one when I have listened to it. One way to do this would be to have playlists covering my collection (e.g. a playlist per folder of tracks) and to remove files from the lists when I have listened.

I'm interested in the M3 but the online manual suggests there is only one editable playlist - the "Dynamic Playlist (DPL). So it would fall short of my ideal requirement.

Is this correct? Or can you edit multiple playlists on-the-go. Maybe they could enhance this by a firmware upgrade.

(By comparison the Creative Zen Touch allows you to save multiple dynamic playlists and name them on-the-go).

23 - Posted by Guest on November 30, 2004 - 7:31 pm

Can you replace the battery yourself, or will it have to be sent back to JetAudio for a large $ charge to replace the battery (or whole unit as with the Ipod)?

24 - Posted by Guest on December 1, 2004 - 12:29 pm

I like this mp3 player a lot, but I have one last question that needs to be addressed.

LINE-IN recording. I am a musician. Normally I have my cpu ready and fanaggle a couple cords to get my guitar, drums, or bass through line-in input of my cpu. It works. Yeah the sound isn't the best, but it WORKS.

Would this same process work with a line-in from the IAUDIO M3 player.

I do not want to buy an mp3 player AND a multitrack recorder (party because I have a multitrack recorder on my cpu already) I figure I could defeat 2 birds with one stone.

If it doesn't work I might as well get an Ipod just to play music.

Anyone know if this is possible (basically just to get a signal into the M3?

25 - Posted by Guest on December 1, 2004 - 12:35 pm

In addition to my question about line-in above posted 12-1-04....

I know plugging a microphone directly into it will not work....( as mentioned by kurtis)

What I do is hook up a mic/or line-out guitar into my minidisc recorder.....then from the audio outs into my cpu

WOuld that work on the M3

Thank

26 - Posted by Guest on December 1, 2004 - 3:00 pm

To Kurtis,

Here is an easier way for me to explain the line-in question.

If you have a minidisc (or CD)player and play a song, and hook it up to the M3 with rca outputs (y-split into 1/8) Will it record the song.

Not guitars and stuff but music playing out of any audio device with rca outputs (tv, stereo, dvd player, cpu, walkman, equalizers etc.

Do you have to download the music you record from analog inputs into your hard drive just to rename it? Can you edit it on a wav editor? To get rid of the gaps or increase the levels?

28 - Posted by Guest on December 2, 2004 - 2:31 pm

29 - Posted by Guest on December 3, 2004 - 4:49 am

Is the M3 reliable? Im going to be recording a lot of things and I would become pretty destructive if the mp3 player crashes and I lose all of my recordings.

30 - Posted by Guest on December 4, 2004 - 2:23 am

I have seen some specifications stating the M3 will read FLAC files and others that don't mention this. Does the M3 40 gig read FLAC?

Does the case for the HD have a belt clip on it?

Is this device safe for going for a jog? If I clipped the remote to my shorts where would the player go, in my hand?

How long is the chord that goes from the player to the remote?

Can the remote be un-plugged and plugged while music is being played without interruption? The reason I ask this is to select songs and then disconnect to conserve battery life. The remote takes battery juice from the player? It isn't charged on it's own is it?

If I have the standard USB, not the 2.0 what speed can I expect on average transferring files to and from the m3?

Does the m3 have any plugins?

Does the m3 have the capability to store contacts and to do lists, like a palm?

If I arrange all the different artists into genre's, can I select one of the genre's and have it randomly play songs from several different sub-directories within that genre?

Thank you very much in advance for answering all these questions. I usually don't post on pages like this, but your answers have been extremely helpful.

31 - Posted by Guest on December 4, 2004 - 1:04 pm

LOL. Sorry about all the questions. FLAC is a lossless codec. On their website it says it will play it, but no where else. I wonder if it did not come with the m3 but was added in the firmware. The FLAC files I have are to large to send. Thanks!

32 - Posted by Guest on December 14, 2004 - 7:10 pm

can you tell me if this player is good for jogging and biking

Dear Sir.

We have an armband as an option.
If you use the armband, you do not have any problem to do a sports.

i was wondering . i am a current ipoder but i have to give it up soon as i am swapping it with my sis and i want to get a new mp3 player, anyway my question is that i have 2000+ songs, how hard is it to choose single songs with this machine compared to the easy touch dial of the ipod . thanks

34 - Posted by Guest on December 22, 2004 - 5:00 am

hi, is there a 2 second pause everytime a track finishes? becuase i listen to trance music and they mix there track through to the next without a pause and the volume doesnt fade away to the bext track, the son hd palyers have a 2 second pause.

35 - Posted by Guest on December 22, 2004 - 6:22 pm

thanks for that, i had a sony VGF-AP1L and returned it becuase there was a 2 second gap everytime the track ended, this is going to be fixed in the firmware update but i couldnt be bothered with it anymore becuase the thing was massive and heavy. im now going to buy the M3 40 gb and if the sound quality is rubbish i'll return it too!

36 - Posted by Guest on December 23, 2004 - 12:34 pm

would u by any chance know exactly how long? thanks

thanks

38 - Posted by Guest on December 24, 2004 - 2:55 pm

thanks for that, but i cant wait that long so i bought one already, :)

btw, i forgot to say that was an excellent review,

40 - Posted by Guest on December 27, 2004 - 9:34 pm

I am interested in buying the M3, specifically because I am an opera singer and want to record lessons etc... (I'm not very technically minded, but had a Archos g mini which I returned mainly because it's wav recording capabilities were inadequate). Can you tell me honestly how good the M3 will record high frequency voice, with it's own microphone. can you recommend a Mp3 player that would be better. I am used to using an external mic' which I think you say will not work well with the M3. I do not want to get all the distortion that often happens when I'm hitting those high notes!

41 - Posted by Guest on December 28, 2004 - 6:36 pm

Help if anyone is out there...

I have been having problems with organising my folders. I have copied whole albums into seperate folders, in the order they play on the album, but the M3 keeps re-organising and playing them in alphabetical order. It is driving me mad.

Also, I just upgraded the firmware (10mins ago) and still can't get the machine to switch on. How long should I wait? Have I screwed it up? Problem as I am off on holiday in 4 hours time...

Any thoughts would be grateful, Lucy.

42 - Posted by Guest on December 29, 2004 - 4:16 pm

hi it's the opera singer again. Thanks for the response. I got good recording results from a sony mini disc player (which I left on a plane) my friend had an older Archos dukebox which recorded ok. I got the newer Archos but couldn't record in wav, not to mention the machine kept mal functioning. I wasn't totally unhappy with the Archos g mini sound quality when I recorded onto compressed files (?) I was hoping the I audio would be a little better yet. Can you reccomend another machine?

43 - Posted by Guest on December 30, 2004 - 8:46 am

You say it will only shuffle in one directory, but can also shuffle files in subfolders. So, does that mean that you can create one main directory, and then create many - ie. hundreds - of subfolders, and in that way you can get it to shuffleplay all of the files it contains? If not, can you expand further on the abilities/limits of the M3's shuffle mode. Thanks.

44 - Posted by Guest on December 31, 2004 - 8:53 am

Hi, I have 2 shuffle options that I really want with the M3, can you let me know if these are possible and if so how I should arrange downloaded albums on the computer to make it possible?

1) Shuffle just the songs contained on one album per time (like listening to a CD on a home stereo with the shuffle button on.

2) An option to shuffle songs from a specific genre which I have set up, eg if I set up a directory containing albums for Fusion, one directory for Rock and say one for folk, will I be able to shuffle just the songs contained in each of the directories? ie can i put a temporary 'wall' around each of them as I wish?

Hope you can help!

Hey, any news on when the new MP3's are available? Also, can you hook the mp3 to a car stereo and can you record directly from say, a Discman? Thanks, Joe

47 - Posted by annan on January 22, 2005 - 3:14 pm

i've been using my iaudio for a while but i've only been organzing my songs by title. If you wanted to organize the same songs by artist and title would the same songs take up more room??

48 - Posted by Guest on January 24, 2005 - 1:54 am

No.
Well, maybe a few bytes more per song, because the name is longer, I guess.

49 - Posted by Guest on February 4, 2005 - 7:47 pm

Any news on the new M3s yet?

50 - Posted by Guest on February 17, 2005 - 11:28 pm

Hello, thanks for taking the time to answer questions here.

I just received the M3 20gig as a gift. I am conducting lots of voice interviews for a book project and my family mainly had the digital voice recording feature of this product in mind when they purchased it for me.

My problem is that when I hooked the device to my computer via USB it completely locked my comp at bootup. If I yank the USB the computer will boot and then I plug the USB back in and run the jet software and get an error. Something to the effect of 'No Device Detected'. Quite useless if I cannot load anything onto it or more importantly pull any files off of it.

Ive tried every port on my computer and even my computer at work with the same results.

I tried calling the customer support number in the user manual and it is disconnected.

Anyone else have a problem like this? Very poor introduction to COWAN products as I have never heard of them before and I will certainly not be in a hurry to buy anything from them in the future.

This is going back to the retailer ASAP.

51 - Posted by Guest on February 18, 2005 - 1:45 am

Thanks for your response...

I was able to get the software to see the m3...apparently it cannot be docked when the computer is booted up otherwise it locks it up. Not sure if this is normal or not.

At any rate I was tried to d/l a set of mp3's into the folder labled 'Playlist'. It apparently loaded them all into this folder but when I went to disconnect the m3 it was stuck at the "USB - Do Not Disconnect" window on the remote unit. The manual mentions running the "Safely Remove Hardware" wizard from the sys tray. Problem is...THERE IS NOTHING IN THE SYS TRAY FOR JETSHELL or IAUDIO !!!! grrrrr!

So I finally just shut down my PC and then unplugged the m3. I started it up to check out the music I loaded but it doesnt show up in the PLAYLIST folder...WTF!?!?!

So back to the PC...plug the m3 back in and lo...there are all the music files. So I copy them over to the root directory in the m3 and then Im stuck at the damn "USB - Do Not Disconnect" screen again >:(

This time I just pull the unit out of the docking station and turn it on. The music files show up in the root directory and play (the part that hurts is that it sounds GREAT!) but all the other issues are too frustrating.

Am I doing something wrong or is the Jetshell a crappy program or is it the unit itself? (in your opinion?)

THanks again Kurtis...I realize you are not tech support for the product but the customer support number is disconnected and I am super frustrated.

52 - Posted by Guest on February 18, 2005 - 2:24 am

You are right about the quality...I just did a test voice recording similar to how I conduct interviews for my book and the sound quality is amazing!!! The ability to then just move the voice file off the unit onto my computer for later transcribing is such a huge plus for me instead of using crappy audio cassettes.

One last question if you dont mind...
Do you know why I cant get the "OK to Disconnect" screen to come up (I swear I read the manual). It says to run the disconnect wizard in the tray but there isnt one. Im worried that just pulling the unit out of the docking station when it clearly says "USB - Do Not Disconnect" could damage the unit.

If I could get that piece figured out I think Im in business.

Thanks!

Thanks for your help Kurtis!

54 - Posted by Guest on February 28, 2005 - 12:33 pm

hey guys -

i'm a mac user, and am desperately trying to get away from the whole ipod thing, because i need mass storage compatibility with both mac and pc. the cowon/jetaudio site SAYS they support the mac, but is that only as a removable hard drive? or will their software work with the mac as well?

it would be a drag not to have a song manager on my comp. i would miss itunes. thanks guys

55 - Posted by Guest on March 4, 2005 - 8:23 pm

hi kurtis - thanks for the great review. i'm looking at buying the 40gb m3.
you mentioned the m3 had to be sent back when the battery needed replacing.
do you know the expected life span of the battery?
and what about memory problems with recharging without running the player flat?
i'm just wandering if it does have problems with battery memory will jet audio replace it or will they only replace if it dies completly. i guess i proberly should ask them this. but any ideas?

56 - Posted by Guest on March 4, 2005 - 8:29 pm

oh, and i meant to ask if you have any clues to those new players you've been teasing about. any news if there might be an updated m3?

57 - Posted by Helpme on March 15, 2005 - 7:27 am

I feel like I may be the only one that doesn't understand how to work this. I just got my iaudio last week, and the only thing that I've been able to do with it is to set my FM tuner (and "safely remove hardware"). The user manual is so vague. I have been trying to download a CD using my computer/USB cord. I ripped the CD in jetAudio, and saved it in "my music" folder. Then I opened it from jetshell and converted it from wav to mp3. I thought I downloaded it to my iaudio, but the software is so confusing, that I don't know where I downloaded it to. But it sure isn't on my iaudio. Help!!!!! I'm so frustrated. Would you mind giving me detaieled instructions from where to rip the cd and where to save it, to how to get it on my iaudio?

Thank you!

58 - Posted by tortuga on April 6, 2005 - 11:13 am

I like the look and description of this, but I have a very specific use for it. I'm a musician looking for something more up-to-date to use instead of my tape recorder for recording lessons and performances; and to use when I practice (flute) to record, play back to analyze myself, fix issue, re-record, play back, etc, etc...

all this in addition to something I can carry aorund the music I want to listen to on, etc. will this do what I need, or should I be looking at a different type of product altogether?

thanks:)

anyone know?

60 - Posted by Guest on April 25, 2005 - 12:01 pm

I'm an engineering student looking at getting an M3 and happened to be reading these comments/questions and have an answer for those of you looking to make good quality music recordings.

The reason why you can't connect a microphone directly to the line-in is because microphone signal levels are very weak compared to line-level signals. You need to attach a microphone amplifier between your M3 and your microphone to boost the signal strength. RadioShack sells this, but having never used it I can't vouch for the sound quality. If you're shopping around, you'll want something with >95dB signal to noise ratio (SNR) since the amplification level for a microphone amp is ~20dB. The higher the SNR rating of the amplifier, the less noise (static) the amplifier introduces to the amplified signal.

Hey
do you know the latest on the new generation of M3s? I emailed iAudio asking about when the new M3s were coming out, and they thought I was tihnking of the X5s. I emailed them a second time, asking if there were going to be any new generations of the M3, and again they thouht I was thinking about the X5. Before emailing them a third time saying that I am NOT talking about the X5s, I thought I would ask you first if you have any information on the new M3s. thanks

62 - Posted by Guest on May 9, 2005 - 9:51 pm

guess i cant get any help here either, nevermind.

63 - Posted by Guest on May 30, 2005 - 6:44 pm

I'd like to know in which order the M3 reads a folder tree like this:

-A
-B
--B1
--B2
-C

Would it play A-B-B1-B2-C, or A-B-C-B1-B2? Maybe it's a silly question, but I've owned players doing the latter, which I hate...

Thanks a lot for the review!

64 - Posted by Guest on May 31, 2005 - 5:57 am

Ok, forget it. Got the answer from iAudiophile: A-B-B1-B2-C -> Great!

Hi Kurtis/Brian,

I read your review on the iAudio M3 with great excitement. You guys have done a great job in answering all the questions above. I think I might have found the mp3 player of my dream. With so many features and rave reviews, I am wondering if this player can be plugged to and played on a set of external speakers. I have a collection of mp3 songs on my computer that I fear may crash one day. My mp3 player will not only serve as a backup but is also portable for me to bring my player and speakers to wherever I go to listen to my collection, like on holiday. I will also appreciated some recommended speakers to go along with this player. Thank you.

I have an iAudio M3 40gb player and am reasonably happy with it, perhaps the battery life's a bit short and the headphones not ideal but on the whole I think it weighs up well against all other compatible players. My one problem is that there's an audible click at the start of tracks as the begin to play. Has anyone else noticed this? Can it be corrected, before copying the tracks or once they're copied and on the player? Thanks, Andrew

Kurtis, thanks for getting back on this. Yes it seems to be making a small click at the start of each track. These are wma files, so I was quite excited to see the firmware upgrade on the iaudio website mentioned "Bug patch for WMA playback" but having successfully installed that the clicks are still there. I've had a look at the various playback settings but altering them, e.g fadein, doesn't seem to make any difference either. I'm genuinely stumped, any ideas?

Yes, I've just checked with some MP3 files I've added and they too have a little click at the start of each track. I guess I'm going to have to contact Cowon. Thanks for your help, hope I've added to the knowledge bank, I'll let you know if I sort it out with them, because I do so want my M3 player to work - as it's still a good player in most all respects.

Guys, could you please tell me where ON EARTH is this wonderful M3 is offered for purchase? couldn't find it available from JetAudio & Cowon, and newegg, buydig, target, or even amazon are all insisting it's out of stock. Did someone see it for sale (not counting used or "like new" Ebay ones)? Thanks.

Hi just wondering if any one knows if Cowan currently produce or have plans to produce an incar charger for the M3. If so would you be able to supply details of where these may be obtained in the U.K. I have tried searching high and low but alas have drawn a blank. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
