Edifier S5.1 240W Speaker System
Introduction
Today I have the pleasure of reviewing the Edifier S5.1 speaker system. Edifier has been making speakers in Beijing, China since 1996 and its worldwide headquarters are now located in Vancouver, Canada. They boast 1800 employees and to have shipped 3 million speaker systems in 2002. Those numbers sound impressive but the fact is you will be hard pressed to find any retailers that sell these speakers in the US as they are currently only just beginning to enter this market. Looking online I did not find many reviews of any Edifier products, and only one complete review of the S5.1 system I will be covering. Are Edifier's speakers worthy of your hard-earned cash? Read on for my thoughts. The Packages I came home to find two massive boxes sitting in my front room; one containing the subwoofer and the other the satellites and accessories. I nearly threw my back out lifting the sub box and after looking a bit closer it's no wonder. The box weighs 60lbs and contains nothing but the subwoofer itself and some foam packing! In the other box, the speakers are packed quite tightly in foam and each piece is wrapped in a plastic bag to keep the finish clean.     There are four satellite speakers, a center channel speaker, the subwoofer, a remote, cables for the sub-speaker connection, cables for sub-source connection, adapters to change the connections from RCA to ΒΌ" jacks and a small (very small) instruction manual.

on September 2, 2004 - 2:34 am Well it would really depend on what you are looking for. Z-680s have extreme bass, and are very powerful, and have great features. The Edifier s5.1 speakers sound great, but you have to tweak your sound settings to get the bass up to normal (as explained in the review), and they are missing some features that the Z-680s have, but according to Nick the satellites sound better on the Edifier speakers. It's really a toss-up. If you are looking for features that the Edifier speakers don't have, then I would go with the Z-680s, but if both speakers would suit your needs fine, either would make a good choice. I personally love my Z-680s. =P I haven't heard the s5.1 myself. 3 - Posted by

on September 2, 2004 - 5:59 pm Edifier would not release the code as it is strictly for maintenance. "Access to these factory presets is granted through a maintenance code entered into the remote (which sadly I was unable to come by)"
