Introduction

When I reviewed Saitek's gaming keyboard, I said that the backlighting looked real nice, but didn't help any with finding keys in the dark. I also said that the gaming pad was not likely to appeal to the majority of the gaming crowd. Now mine wasn't the first review on the keyboard and I certainly wasn't saying something that hadn't been said before. Many like the keyboard, even called it great, but it just seemed flawed.

Well apparently Saitek listened to the criticisms and decided to do something about it. They dropped the gaming pad altogether, laser-etched the letters onto the keys, tweaked the backlight a little and re-released the keyboard under the "Eclipse' moniker. While the form looks completely unchanged, the new backlighting scheme promises to live up to those late-night LAN party needs.

Ooo, I like that much better...wonder if I can trade mine in for the new one. :D

edit: Well I emailed Saitek to see if its possible to purchase the etched keys separately to replace the ones on my Gamers keyboard.

Yah, they actually tweaked the brightness on the backlight too and the plastic seal underneath the keys is darkened between the keys to keep glare down.

Too bad they dont have an upgrade program where you can send yours in and get a $20 credit or something. :)

lol, that's why you buy that sort of stuff from best buy, so you can get store credit and exchange later :-P

That is a sweet looking keyboard. Would come in very handy for night gaming. Looks better than those Zippy EL-Keyboards.

Keyboard is great - problems using it with Windows XP Pro as the USB driver doesn't support it but it still seems to work ok with Microsoft's default. Saitek mentions a CD enclosed with the keyboard if you go to their website for a patch that might fix the problems but the instructions refer to using the "CD enclosed with the Keyboard" as the final step - and the patch they have available on-line at their website isn't "Microsoft Compliant" so there were two reasons not to install the update without further confirmation from Saitek that it was good.

Overall, I love the keyboard and will buy another as soon as the USB driver issue has been resolved.
