Introduction

If you read our QuakeCon Day 1 Coverage article, you know that we walked away disappointed and, well! a bit shaken. The problem was that we were excited to see a "Special Presentation" by NVIDIA, but instead we were bombarded with... half-naked dancing men, lame dares and an utter lack of anything we would call "special.' We left that night extremely disappointed. In fact, we were considering driving around Dallas to find something fun to do, but the event was such a downer for us that we didn't even feel like going out and having fun. We just wanted to post the article, and go to sleep. Truth be told, we wanted to go home, but we decided to give QuakeCon another chance.

Luckily, our decision to stay in Dallas paid off, because today went very well. This is what our schedule looked like today:

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: The DOOM Movie - A special panel discussion
1:30 PM - 2:00 PM: id Software Special Presentation
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM: QuakeCon Keynote - John Carmack

The DOOM Movie Panel Discussion

Basically, the DOOM movie panel discussion was a sort of question and answer session where Stephen Butts (from IGN.com I think) was doing the asking and Todd Hollenshead (CEO, id Software), Jeremy Steckler (co-executive producer, DOOM the movie) and John Rosengrant (special effects supervisor, Stan Winston studio) were there to answer.

I managed to take videos of a couple of the more interesting questions / responses, so make sure to check those out, but here's some of the more important things! A lot of effort has been put into the movie to make it stay true to the game - part of which involves a very unapologetic sort of approach, and apparently it was the intention from day one to get an R rating. Todd said something along the lines of "as with the game, we knew the movie had to be violent! just to be violent." After only a few minutes, they asked if we'd like to see the movie trailer - obviously we all said yes. We recorded a movie of the trailer, so make sure you give that a look.

Regarding the script, Jeremy mentioned that they had to revise the script over 30 times to get it just right. When asked about the basic storyline, and whether it follows with the game, Todd said "You're on Earth, you go to Mars through a worm hole, and then you realize you're in over your head and try to fight your way through demons from hell to get back." Todd noted that while visiting the movie set in Prague, it felt as though he felt as though he walked from Prague into the UAC center - everything looked as it did in the game, and as though you were on Mars, just like the game. John and everyone else at Stan Winston were of course thrilled to hear that they had Todd's approval, and then John started to talk about the various animatronics, prosthetics, and CGI work that went into the movie.

You may have heard rumors that the movie will feature a scene that attempts to re-create the feel of the FPS genre by showing you the character's point-of-view. It was revealed that this is in fact true, and better yet, we had the privilege of being the first to see the scene. We were even nice enough to take some videos so you can see it as well. However, a couple of things to note are that the scene is still a work-in-progress, the music, lighting, and other details will be polished more from what we saw today. Second, there were a lot of very low tones (heavy bass) during the scene, and our PowerShot A95 doesn't exactly have an amazing microphone, so we got lots of nasty distortion; also, the movies came out pretty dark. Oh well, we did our best with what we had, just check out the videos.

Todd then mentioned that the movie would be in theaters on October 21st. We were also shown a bit of concept art and behind-the-scenes photos of some of Stan Winston's creations.
