i posted a topic in one of the gaming forums i frequent about the new release of DoD mod for HL. wanted to hear some more reactions.
anyone got it? i love it, although i am having a hardtime managing to frag anyone cuz i have been addicted to SoF2 recently. i have been playing the game and following it's evolution from the early beta stages, and it was just released last week for retail. i think it is way better than counter strike.
any opinions???

DoD is one of the popular mods that CNET and Gamespy offers to download. It can be fun on faster computers but it seriously lags a bad computer. Not that ANY OF YOU have crap PCs but if you want to play CS you do it on a P3 or higher.
God Bless,

i have a pretty crap machine, and mine plays faily well. my vid card is crap i mean. gf2 32mb. all of the hl mods play well on my machine, much better than sof2 does.
i still suck at DoD despite that.
DoD is a good idea but bad management in my opinion. Why was Counterstrike so popular? Because of the reality of once you are dead in a certain round or period, you STAY dead. Not like no quake or ut2k3 shit where u respawn every god damn second so u pretty much arent good about fraging, but doing objectives where in CS you have to precise on your game or your no where in the skill level to compete with the best of the best. DoD i have found out also has a silly way of scoring in where killing your team doesnt get you anything, but capturing flags do in the all popular league CAL for alot of games. So in my summary of DoD is, good thought, good gfx, good weapons n such, bad idea of letting noobs respawn with a automatic gun every time they die, bad idea of scoring, etc etc etc... BAD BAD BAD. Verdict : PLAY CS TIL DOD COMES INTO LOGICALLY TERMS THEN PLAY MORE CS!!!! #teamhc gamesnet.irc :) CS!

I can understand the comments on only one life a round and that's great for certain players that play that way. Personally I'm not that good at staying alive. The respawn timer makes it pretty good and controlling massive popups of people and allows those that aren't that good at staying alive to have some fun to.
In some cases accidently getting blasted in the beginning of the round makes it really unfun. ("Hey look you found the sniper.. " :) )
It also doesn't stop and start the flow of the game as much, especially if there is a round where there are only two guys left and they are putzing around waiting for the round to run out.
The point is that there are styles of play for different players. This doesn't make one or the other bad, just different and it appeals to different people.

the whole respawn dilemma is a matter of preference i think. i sux at CS, but i love to play it.
DoD is fun, but it is more capture the flag based and without the respawn, it would be pretty much a one on one ctf game...which would be pretty lame.
the specialists mod for HL is also loads of fun. if you basically want to play a good HL based first person shooter of "the matrix" download this mod. www.specialistsmod.net its got the whole slo-mo bullet time deal which kix azz and a host of nifty weapons...even more than CS.
w00t!!!! :D
I only played dod 3 times and then my damned pc died =(..so i dont really feel like trying and playing it again

Well, a new version of DoD, for Valve's Source engine, is not far from release, so I thought I might resurrect this thread in anticipation. Pre-release beta screenshots look every bit as good as they should.
See screenshots of DoD:Source here (http://standard.1dod.com/dods.htm).
The new version is going to be free to some, while other may have to purchase it through Steam, or when boxed copies appear in stores.
I like the gameplay of DoD more than CS personally. Why? Because the reload times on the guns are long, there is mg's with deployment, the respawn timer effectively creates a "wave" making it a more team oriented game style as well as points for flags/objectives usually counting for more. Their is a stamina/running system to prevent bunny hopping bastards and allow more varied tactics I feel. You can't run for very long without getting tired however, and you also can't shoot while running. When you play against people who are really good, it's a lot of fun and a real challenge.
This is a game where camping is the only tactic for two classes, the sniper and machine-gunner. It's also just a more serious game I think, and it's subject matter is compelling, the second world war! Those old guns were kick-ass!
It isn't perfect by any means, but I never enjoyed the ridiculously fast paced gameplay of games like UT or even CS which seems faster than it should be. I like being a sneaky bastard in DoD, knowing the maps as best I can and playing very smart, and carefully, and when your team actually works together it's wicked fun.
Weapons I prefer to use:
Axis - Kar98, MP40, Stg44
Allies - M1 Garand(pwns!), "Thommy," BAR
1 pwn n00bs @ dod!

I haven't played DoD in a long while since I no longer own a copy of the original HL, but when I did, it was the only game where I can say I was actually good at it. I loved DoD, the gameplay was superb and really intense. The audio was awesome, lots of endless chaotic clashes with explosions and noises! Fantastic!
Unfortunately, I didn't purchase HL2 silver or gold, so I guess I'd have to dish out some money to play it. I'll wait and see how the transfer went, since some of those screens don't look much enhanced from the original. I don't want different gameplay, but like CS:S, I wouldn't mind it looking up to date :-)

Now that I look closer I noticed some of the textures aren't new in those pics, however I read somewhere (planethalflife?) that the dev team wasn't happy with the quality of the textures and have postponed their original plans to release it early this spring. Instead they have gone back and redone nearly every texture and I think the models too.
The gameplay hasn't changed one bit apparently so It's still the same game.
It may not be a huge success like CS, but I still like it more..
