Norton SystemWorks Disk Optimizer vs. Windows Disk Defragger

I was told that the defragger in Norton SystemWorks is better than Windows Disk Defragmentor. Can anyone confirm this. I use Norton to defrag since it organizes everything nuch better. I feel like things are a bit faster, but I don't know if that is just a placebo-effect-like idea or if it actually is faster. Responses are valued.....just as much as my woman.

For a long time the windows defragger was an older, simpler version of norton. The norton version usually/used to use a more efficient code. However, symantec has added so much extra crap I'm not really sure it's that much better anymore, but since year after year I get system works free after rebate, I'm about to install 2003.

Just use the windows defragger, set it to do it once a week at night or some such. There is very little difference gained by defragging, let alone difference between different defraggers, with the exception of how fast they complete the defrag.

The norton one with 2003 is better and faster...but before you do anything they did something very annoying with it...you have to go to the anaylize button on the very left click that and anaylze you're hard disk before you defrag...usually they put that with defragging but they seem to be wanting to be very neat in this version no matter how annoying it is to the customers...anyway its faster better and I like it since I get it free cause my dad gives it to me to put on my computer *bauhahahhahehah* :P

I couldn't tell you the difference between the two at least windows and Norton 2002. I have the Norton 2003 Kazaa version :wink: but I haven't used speed disk yet because I didn't see a difference in the earlier version.

Yes, it is! I still don't know how symantec stays in business, I got my first NSW (version 2 I think) as a "profesional sample" and have used the free upgrade ever year (instead of paying $9.99+ for the anti-virus subscription) I had to learn to disable/uninstall the parts I don't like/think cause more problems then they fix. but free is good.

Woah dude, I beg to differ. I download and delete 24/7 (except when my computer is starting up from a power outage), so I have to defrag every few days AT LEAST. Why do you say is makes little difference? Wouldn't you want the files on your hard disk to be contiguous rather than scattered and chopped up throughout the hard disk. And there is a huge difference in how they work. Norton sorts the files by how often they are accessed while it defrags, and windows defrag just defrags until files are contiguous. Norton takes longer, and seems to be better in the sense that it organizes things by how often I access them, so overall things tend to be much quicker.[/quote]

dunno, I've never defragged my ext3/reiserfs. Everything seems ot be working after a year, no real slow downs that I've noticed.
