Alrighty. Here I will update progress on my computer. Right now I am just waiting to see if my dad will actually bring home that 76mm truck drill bit.

I am still undecided on the paint. I really need suggestions. I am now considering painting it black (it is beige right now), and writing some cool word on the top and having some flame-like double line that goes around the case (bottom of front to top to back to bottom of back). I need ideas, because mine suck. I will post pictures after I paint it, but I need to figure out what color and design I will paint first.

Woops. I forgot to mention that I am customizing the case...not the whole computer hardware and stuff.

i would check out autozone or some other auto parts store for paint. some of the nicer auto paint really looks sweet. they also sell color-change spray paint there, if you like that look.

don't forget to primer and sand too.

as far as designs on the paintjob, i think flames are played out. if you have any artistic skill, you could do a hand-painted detail like the old cadillacs or schwinn bikes. then of course there are always stickers. i prefer the bigass safety stickers like these:

enjoy

I do in fact have artistic skill...I am like the kid at school that you would know as 'the art guy' or when it comes to group projects in class, people usually want to pair up with me because I pwn all other projects when it comes to posters and shit. I didn't need to know where to get paint...already have it..but thanks anyways...and it is funny you mentioned the schwinn stuff...the reason my dad spends all his time working on crap with all the tools he has is because he restores Whizzers and motorcycles as a hobbie.

I just need an idea for color and I was thinking of painting a white on black retro-abstract looking face...(on the side that won't have the window) and on the top I wanted to have a word like (my bro came up with this list so bare with me): SIMONIZED, Simon Customs, PWNER, Sex Machine, Sex Box, FCUKER (not a typo), Simon

If you didn't guess already, my last name is Simon....I don't know what to write...are any of those even good? I bet you are laughing at them come up with something I am desperate for suggestions.

you could do a green case, and put the text TheTechLounge on it lol. :D

MyFifthLimb
05-21-2003, 06:22 AM
Ummm...I don't like green. I don't want to make it say TheTechLounge either...something for me not for you. There is a kid in this room playing a recorder...you know those elementary school instruments. Yeah I will kick him now.

Lol, I am fairly sure kurtis was joking... but seriously though, put "The Tech Lounge" on it or I will destroy you.

I'm just kidding too... yes... kidding...

*plotting destruction*

what i want to do to mine is draw with either a high grade permanent marker or with sign painting ink/paint is draw the insides of an old tv or ENIAC style computer, making it look as though there is a window in the side of my machine looking into a retro 'puters guts.

i was also thinking of doing an illustration of a mouse on a running wheel, kinda like an old rube goldberg style machine. example:

http://www.rube-goldberg.com/html/pencil_sharpener.htm

although mine would look better as i have 1337 illustration skittles.

word.

lols. that retro computer idea could actually be pretty damn cool

MyFifthLimb
05-21-2003, 06:14 PM
that does seem cool....I got a picture I am drawing of a face it is pretty damn cool....Your mouse in the wheel gave me an idea. An old man pedaling...as if he is running the computer! Dude another Idea! I could hook up some gears and have the guy actually pedalling. screw that i am getting carried away...that is a waste of time, because who would really pay attention to it. I need to look at my monitor, not my case. I haven't been able to paint my case yet because my damn dad keeps forgetting to bring home the drill bit. He tells me that I have to remind him. I told him a million times. I will have to drive down to his office myself if I have to. Anyways I thought things over again. I am thinking of themes. My current ideas are: Soylent Green (the only way I would paint it green), Spam (the food not the e-mail god damn it), Speed (the drug), computer case (thats right, the theme will be "computer case") <-I'm joking. Screw this. I have the worst ideas. Help me someone.

i say make it a glossy jet black with some silver lining if you want it to just look cool. Or you could do green and put a couch on it :P

There is a kid behind me talking about rice cars. He is a ricer. I have seen his car. Pure homo. Anyways, Black and silver sound nice, but I want to paint all my drives and the inside, possibly the PSU too. My dad still didn't bring the 76mm punch. He is annoying the shit out of me. My brother has christmas LED lights. I may put all of the red LEDs in the front of my case. There is a rough-textured translucent plastic cover that fits over it. I need to test it out first. Also, I can use a glossy paint, but I won't be able to make it completely glossy, because the texture of the case is a rough, bumpy like texture...if anyone knows what I am talking about.

does plast-i-kote still make that fleckstone paint. that stuff is awesome.

here you go:

these are so cool :!:

MyFifthLimb

Actually, what I was saying was that the case is already a bumpy texture, therefore I cannot make it look glossy. It will still look cool.

Brian
05-23-2003, 02:00 PM
You could always sand it down...

handrail
05-23-2003, 02:01 PM
oh, i understood limb, i was just hinting at some extra texture options since you can't go for the gloss look. might as well make it look like a huge hunk o' granite if you can't make it look like KITT.

Yesterday, when I was scoping out what I had to do when transfering the motherboard to the case, my parents walked in and just freaked out and said they didn't want me f*cking around with the "working computer" (my old custom built crapped out once and my mom, superbitch number one, never wanted me to buy a custom built ever again). So now I am left having to use my old AMD 1.4GHz Tbird, used to have 1024MB of DDR PC2100 RAM, but sold it...and Before my parents came in to tell me to stop, I had already taken the Volcano 6 heatsink +fan off of the processor....so now I need to buy thermal paste, and RAM. I put in my old 56x CD-ROM drive, and an old 16x10x40x CD-RW. I also put in a 3.5" floppy drive, but I have no more ZIP drives. I put in the Zalman fan controller, compliments of TheTechLounge.com :D Now I am setting the paint dilemma off to the side, because now I am trying to figure out an efficient way to cool the computer with fans (no water cooling...I am plannign on spending less than 50 dollars to get this machine running). My dad thought of putting 2 intake fans near the bottom of the side panel, and 2 exhaust fans near the top, so the air inside would cycle efficiently. And I thought about adding a blowhole to the top and also using the normal blowhole on the back too. And suggestions about where I should place my fans.

Kurtis
05-24-2003, 02:00 PM
I suggest using all 120mm fans if they will fit. 1 x 120mm in front (2 if possible), 1 x 120mm in side, 1 x 120mm blowhole on top, 1 x 120mm in back for exhaust

Brian
05-24-2003, 02:07 PM
Yeah, then you can set the 120s at 7v so they are very quiet yet still pull good air. Hope you have a dremel.

I don't really care about the noise level, my music drowns it out anyways.
Now another idea that has come up is: What operating system?

a. Windows 2000 Pro
b. Windows XP Pro
c. Mandrake Linux
d. Red Hat Linux
e. Debian Linux ?
f. Your suggestion of Linux
g. Your suggestion

Give me a freaking suggestion

I have already decided that I do not want Windows Server 2003, because I don't need a server...it would be completely useless, I don't want anything like Solaris or anything that probably won't run on my motherboard (Soyo SY-K7V Dragon), definitely not a Linux or Unix that doesn't have a GUI.

Brian
05-24-2003, 11:40 PM
I would say just use WinXP unless you NEED Linux. I have WinXP and have NO complaints.

MyFifthLimb
05-25-2003, 09:46 AM
Since this machine is all just for fun and just a project, I have decided to dual boot with Windows XP Pro, and Mandrake Linux....or which Linux do you think I should do?

Brian
05-25-2003, 11:13 AM
I would say mandrake, I hear it's one of the easiest to start with.

MyFifthLimb
05-25-2003, 02:34 PM

I am going to have to halt everything for about a week because of school and finals and crap I know I know It is hard enough for me to have to sit and study while I have all the glorious tools and things to screw around with.

Oh yeah, I may actually do Red Hat Linux, because my friend who runs a business and is familiar with dual-booting windows and linux suggested Red Hat over Mandrake, but said if I wasn't dual-booting I should go Mandrake...so I think I am going Red Hat...then go Black Hat *snicker hahaha joke I am funny haha snicker*

Q: Why do Ethopian girls give the best head?
A: Because you know they will swallow.

Actually that sucked.

Alright, I got my bro's old computer..that used to be mine...and before that our family computer.. It is an 8 year old Pentium II 233MHz computer...I have done everything with it, except sex and linux. Therefore, I installed Red Hat Linux release 9 (shrike) on it. At first the video was all messed up, even throughout installation. But I fixed it quick, remembered something from like 5 years ago. (I switched the video drivers from S3 ViRGe, to the vesa drivers). Now that I have it running on linux....I have no idea what to do with it...I tried getting it online with an LNE100TX Linksys card, but I couldn't get it working...that was with little effort put into the driver configuration process. I will try again later when I have the energy...it is pretty sweet but if I can't get it online...then it is pointless sitting in my room all alone with no other computer to comunicate with...I may install Linux Mandrake and see if I can connect if I can't eventually get it to connect under Red Hat... I am going to use the hard drive it is currently on as a hard drive for the swapfile for the computer this thread was originally started for...whatever gotta go.

Alright;...it has been a while. I had summer school. Here is the update

I have two 40GB hard drives on an IDE RAID 0 array ( i would have made a 0+1, but my brother is using the drive i was going to use).

Dual boots between Windows 2000 Pro and Mandrake Linux 9.1

Zalman Fan Controller with 4 uv reactive fans connected and also 2 more bigger ones (3 intake, 3 exhaust)

ATI Radeon 8500 LE 128MB(I am using spare parts guys...bare with me)

AMD 1.4GHz processor (again spare parts,...and it can't be overclocked...long story...also reason why i switched back to Intel)

Soyo Dragon motherboard (266MHz FSB)

Kingston 1GB DDR PC2100 RAM w/Heat spreaders

Krex case.,..do not buy anything from www.krex.com i ordered from there since they were in driving distance (far, but drivable) all you get is shit in a box....a gauranteed shit in the box at that....that is why i am desperate for a new case this one has no ventilation ...i had to cut holes in it just to set up my fans...i cant see inside either

ill post more detailed facts later

why don't you guys paint with truck bed liner. you can get it tinted and it would wear like grannies undies.
ok to get an occasional accident, it cleans right up hahaha.

I am now considering painting it black (it is beige right now), and writing some cool word on the top and having some flame-like double line that goes around the case

..... all you need is: Permanent markers(various colors) and tinfoil and stickers, my case is beige and is hot and some pencil to write"woot" and "dave mirra" on it :-p
