Okay..here is the sitrep in a nutshell.
Bought a brand new Sidewinder Precision 2 for BF 1942 (good review of this btw) and can't get it to work right.
CD software is installed. (Test cannot find joystick)
USB device is found (listed as Unknown Device)
Game Controller does auto detect for MS Sidewinder and finds 3d Pro on Sound Blaster Live Gameport (listed as Not Connected)
USB is on in BIOS. I have done all the trouble shooting and a few other things I know to do.
I am running WinXP Pro with Service Pack 1.
Can anyone help me get this joystick to work?

Do you have the sidewinder plugged into a USB port? If you are plugging it into the front of your case, try plugging it into a different USB port, one in the back maybe. Let me know if that works.

Have tried all 4 ports (2 on front and 2 in back)...no luck.

hmm. well... windows XP SHOULD autodetect it... Do you have other USB devices plugged in that work?
The thread name suggests that the chord is screwed up. Did your dog chew through the cable? that could cause some problems...

First USB device I have tried..no others connected either (of course).
When I do the autodetect..it finds a Microsoft Sidewinder 3d Pro on the Sound Blaster Live Sound Card gameport (which has NOTHING on it) and shows Not Connected.

More importantly, are you SURE that the joystick is really there at all?
I mean.. really?

Is the cable intact completely? Is this a brand new joystick straight out of the box? Do you have another USB device you can plug in to see if that works?

No other USB devices I can use to check (unfortunately).
Brand new..bought yesterday from Walmart especially for BF1942..heh.
I have even gone and got the latest 4in1 MB drivers for my motherboard (came out 20 May 2003).
Had the problem before them...and same problem after (they have done nothing that I can tell).
And the connector cant go in any farther. (heh)

is there any converter from USB to the gameport type?

Nope...going straight to the USB...been thinking I might get a USB to Gameport adapter but, only ones I have found have the same USB plug and Gameport connector....I need a female USB and a male Gameport if I go that way..and even RadShak don't have them.

About the chewing part...I have been trying for 2 days on this and meant I am to the point of chewing my own arm off...heh.
For something that should be extremely simple...I have been given 2 days of hell....grrrr

hmmmm. once again... is this a brand new joystick from the box?
Yes. I have the 4.0 CD also..used it. Got to the second step (the test) and it can't locate the stick...
