Yeah you should build your own. Goto this site and check it out if you havent been there already, www.newegg.com , you can get anything you want for pretty cheap.

If you dont wanna go thru the trouble of building ur own system, although I highly recommend you give it a try as u can learn a whole lot. Try www.tigerdirect.com big name site that generally has very good prices. Esp compared to giants like Dell.

Dont buy from Tigerdirect, when you buy from tigerdirect, in the agreement, you agree that they can give you CC number to a phone company and they charge you 30 bucks a month for like a year or 2 years. Never EVER buy from tigerdirect.com, hate them, cuz they did it to my dad, those bastards :x :x

If you do buy online i would give http://www.ebuyer.com or http://www.scan.co.uk/ a try.

Between them i bought everything from nothing. Ebuyer is really good for service as I ordered the wrong thing, and they let me refund it in full. Scan are very quick, i got everything within 3 days from them.

Scan also do a very good One Day Only page where prices are often cut a bit. If you dont mind buying things over a week or so from them you can save a packet!!!

On the refurbishment side of things... never found a good reseller. I spent ages looking for one but could only find 386 type machines. Best was a PII 333 i think.

Check your local college newspaper. People sell all sorts of stuff. Especially after school lets out. Your best bet would be to just build a new one from older parts, not the latest or greatest. PC2100 DDR Ram is cheap now, so are the AMD XP 1700's. If you just need a machine to do basic stuff and not loads of games, then $400 for a new system is not unreasonable.

pricewatch is good if you're really careful about it. just as a general rule, try not to buy generic parts. especially memory.

i bought a seagate HD from a seller on pricewatch a while back, it was defective, and i had to jump thru hoops trying to get it returned and exchanged. took me about a month to finally get a replacement, which ended up being a different, smaller drive.

pricewatch can be great for finding good deals on some things, but i'd suggest www.newegg.com or www.directron.com

Don't do EBUYER I say don't.
I live in The uk here, and they are bad.
I asked for a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ but they gave me a Volcano 7.
Also I bought a rheobus from there, and it was 2nd hand with the heatsink to get rid of 20watts of heat nailed into the pcb, they said it was fine and had the cheek to send it back. I sent it back again at my expense and asked for another one, and they only gave me the money! - Waste of time.
For the Uk, dabs is good:

But not Usa :(

one thing to do if you use pricewatch, is check the sellers out at www.resellerratings.com first. And yeah directron is great. Newegg is okay but i wont buy a proc from them again cuz they sent us a crappy costa rica chip... we need malaysia! damn you newegg! :P

RMA the chip and try again. NewEgg rocks on RMA's! They have yet to ask a single question when I need to return anything. :D Directron looks OK, but their CPU prices are high compared to NewEgg's.

You should go custumize a computer with parts from NEWEGG, they have low prices, some of the shipping is free, and you dont have to get all the extra programs like Quattro Pro on a computer from Dell :x .

Definitely better to build rather than buy. I just built an AMD 2500+ w/ dual 160 GB raid0 for $550. On the flip side Dell, Compaq, HP etc. use low grade components. I just had to upgrade my friend's brand new $1000 HP so it would run Star Wars KTOR. It didn't have an AGP slot so i had to use a PCI video card.

That's ridiculous... but then again, so is HP. :x
