Weeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
Now have two computer running through my NetGear 815 :))) Took me about 40mins total - 15 mins to install wires and connect first computer, 5 mins to get first computer going. 20 minuets for second computer as the NIC card had a few problems and wouldn't 'see' the router.

Both me and girlfriend enjoying the delights of being able to surf the net at the same time Weeeeeeeee!!!

Me = happy bunny, *bounce* *bounce*

Welcome to wide world of LAN. Ain't it fun!! :D
A LAN just enables more people to get pissed off when the Internet dies. (I know from experience):(

Experience is just hitting me now as gf site is playing up... she has resorted to child like behaviour by smashing keys and clicking several times on each and every link... her poor 'puter.

:D This place however is running fine, much to her anger Muhahahahahahah!

Yeah, I reset my LAN often so that the shared connection can be more focused upon my computer, which always pisses off my sister who just happens to be leaching off of my resurces that are in MY room... she doesn't get the argument though and complains...But LANs are yummy... mmm.:)

seem to be hitting a problem at the moment where i cant turn the router off without it losing the ability to connect. Weird as the settings are saved and still there when i open the browser. It just requires that i 'apply' them again.

Annoying as i am not wanting to have this thing always on.

???Your best bet would be to turn off the modem..either DSL or cable. Routers are really meant to be left on anyway. You are probably looking at the caches web page in the config. Is the router noisy??

Hippy
07-29-2003, 05:08 PM
it is a 4 port modem and router all in one. And no it doesn't make a sound :)

Rich
07-29-2003, 05:29 PM
What brand/make/model/ etc? If you are concerned with security, you might try a software firewall such as zone alarm. I am just trying to understand the problem further. :D

Check pricewatch, you can get some dirt cheap routers there

Pricewatch is good, sometimes looking for sales at CompUSA or other computer stores will work too. You just have to look around. You could also go wireless if you wanted to avoid the wiring mess. Games should not be affected by the slower speeds.

i have a netgear router with 3 computers hooked up to it

anyone wanna tell me how to open ports on my netgear RP114?

Rich
07-30-2003, 03:58 AM
You usually want to look for port forwarding. This would really only be necessary if you are trying to start up an internet server. Most routers will allow traffic which originated from inside the network, such as game servers etc.. Which ports are you interested in. Manual for RP114 is HERE (ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/Reference_Guide_for_RP114.pdf)

m[X] - a good place to start would be - http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk - even if your outside the UK it still have loads of information and reviews on the many, many bits of equipment you can get. Very helpful for deciding what the solution to your individual problem/needs are.

I am going to network my linux box with my windows box. I'm going to use some crossover cable, someone is sending me something. But he told me to buy CAT5.. and I'm gettin an RJ45 crimper tool. Anyone done this before? I'm hoping it's easy... I'm also going to install the ethernet drive on one of my computers, and the modem on my other computer... It's going to suck now. But my goal is to network both comps, and make it so I can be online on both comps, at the same time, with dial up :X ... Soon I'll get cable, hopefully...

I have wired many a cat5 cable. You will need a good crimper, ends, and some good cable. I would highly recommend a cat5 line tester too. Unless you are going tp make lots of cable, it is probably a lot cheaper just to buy a cable.

I am probably going to buy this crimper:

http://shop1.outpost.com/product/2549991

And this cable:

What's a line tester?

Thanks...

Rich

This is what I use. A line tester will let you know if you have the wires in the right order and if the connection is good.

Ah' not really sure what you're doing that for, doesn't actually help anything (except the other computers are temporaily knocked off line freeing some bandwidth

It's when my sister's computer is doing nothing but talking on AIM and her computer is seen as idle, my router seems to only evenly distribute bandwidth when both computers are doing intensive things with their given bandwidth when it is reset.:)

What kind of router are you using to share your connection and what speed is the connection? What OS are each system running?

I think all my equipment has been off less than it has been turned on. I forget what it is like not to hear fans wizzing in the background everytime I have a massive power failure. :D, Besides it takes too long to boot everything up in the right order anyway.

The items that were list look like they will work. If you are going to make your own cables, I would still RECOMMEND a line tester. They are a bit expensive, but they will save you the hassle of trying to use a bad cable. I have found that I have about a 10% failure rate on making cables. Once you crimp an end, you have to cut it off and start all over. Hopefully you will cut off the bad end and not the good. The most it ever took me to get a cable right as 6 ends. Damn near drove me nuts.

Belkin Standard 4-port, Cable- about 1.5 MBps shared, XP Pro. :) It always helps to reset after both have been sitting idely also, such as just now when I got home...

any crimper and any bulk cable will work fine notix

a line tester will help speed up the process, if u can justify spending the cash for a bit of time gained...i really wouldnt care much...if it takes some extra time, so be it...not like i have anything else to do probably lol

just make sure u know the order of the wires, and if you feel like uwanna make a crossover cable, reverse the order of wires on one end (pretty much a "no shit" but somtimes ppl cant figure out what i mean by crossover lol...it "crosses over" ...haha...get it..:P )

Yup, it worked =) I got linux (mandrake) networked with my WinXP and they are both sharing a dial up connection. =( Hopefully it will be cable soon.... *sigh*. Cable would make such a big difference in my life =) heh, I went to frys to buy the stuff, spent an hour there... It was pretty cool, that store is like my mall to a girl (don't get any ideas)... Now, I need some money to customize a computer, well I just got one... I won't be needing it anytime soon. See my setup here:

http://setup.notix.net

Thanks!

P.S. It took me `1 solid hour to make 1 end of the CAT5 crossover cable, and btw, I found the color code online...

better tape that wire down that goes down the hall, I've seen (and worked on fixing) the results of some really bad things , that happened when someone tripped.
(I worked to fix the computers, the paramedics worked on the tripee and the former owner of some nice hardware)

I won't post my setup.. the amount of space I have in my room is pretty bad. I'm cramped in there now. When I get my new apartment in May I'll be in much better shape and actually be able to get a real desk instead of my small junior desk that I've got now..
