Well, my dad has been complaining about how loud our current computer is. Its an Athlon 800 and the fan on the heatsink is a 60x10mm fan. I haven't been able to find a quiet fan that size and the heatsink uses these clips so i can't put a thicker fan on, so we were thinking of replacing the heatsink. So what socket size is the Athlon?

athlon 800 be slot A meaning big butt, but cool lookin, processor. It uses the same HSF as slot 1 = pentium II so look fer those 2. Try directron -> http://www.directron.com/slota1.html . Hope u find what ur lookin for.

thre were 800mhz thunderbrids who were socket a i believe
but whatever if its been resolved chances are it was a slot lol

Actually i'm not sure if it is a slot a, because i ended up taking the heatsink out and measuring it. The slot a ones were too big. A socket a one looks like it should fit.

does the processor look like a black rectangular block? if it does its a slot. I measured the heatsink on a PII 200MHZ and it came out to be 11.5*8*3 which is almost twice as wide as the cpu, although it doesnt use a fan.

There are actually some Pentium III that are slot a. Look at your CPU, is it the same as the one here: http://www.directron.com/thunderbird800.html

If so, then it is a Slot A

No, my chip dosen't look like that. I believe it is a socket, not slot.

im not a fan of slot processors either... my old tbird was a slot a... took me forever just to figure out how to get the damn thing out of there, and then i upgraded everything and set that old proc on fire! (literally)

I sold mine, but hell was it hard to install/uninstall correctly without breaking those little locking tabs, I hated it... Argghh... :P

All right, so your CPU is a square? It's a socket A then. I would try to find a retail fan for the 800mhz, retail fans are usually quite quiet.

Yes, its square. I would buy a fan, but the only kind that fit that heatsink are 60x60x10mm and the only fan i have been able to find that size is too loud. I would get a 60x25mm but the heatsink uses clips that won't work for thicker fans. I would have to make my own out of some wire (which i guess wouldn't be that hard).

haha guess it isnt resolved just yet

u could make a wire thing to hold the fan on quite easily...in fact thats waht thermalright does...uses wire cilps to hold the fans on

are you sure u cant adjust the location whre the clip is inserted into the heatsink so u can mount thicker fans?

also, have u tried oiling the fan if its making a really nasty sound? (machine oil)

No, I haven't tried oiling the fan. I guess i should try that.

If noise is a problem, you might be able to use a device to control the speed of the fan. Just monitor the temp and fan speed and find the right mix. This has worked on several systems I have had which seemed to be a bit loud.

Well, I looked at ajustable fans, but I think that is too much stuff for the rest of my family to think about while using the computer. I'm going to a computer expo in pittsburgh sunday so i will try to find a quiet fan there.
