Vivendi's 'Half Life 2' Hit by Code Theft

By Ben Berkowitz and Dominique Vidalon

LOS ANGELES/PARIS (Reuters) - Hackers have stolen the source code to "Half-Life 2" and distributed a portion online, leading the game's developer to say on Tuesday that the release date for one of the most anticipated PC games had been thrown into question.

The data theft, one of the worst to hit the video game industry, drew mixed responses from fans, some of whom pledged to help find the perpetrators while others rushed to the Internet to try to find screenshots or even playable fragments of the game.

Last week, developer Valve Software issued a public plea for help after the source code to the game began to make its way around the Internet. In a posting on a fan forum, Valve managing director Gabe Newell said someone had hacked into Valve's systems and stolen the code.

Newell said that the hacker or hackers used a flaw in a Microsoft Corp. program to install a malicious program known as a keystroke recorder on several computers at Bellevue, Washington-based Valve.

On the fan Web site HalfLife2.net, word spread on Tuesday that a playable version of the game, built on the stolen code, had found its way onto Internet file sharing sites. Multiple users reported seeing the files or movies of the game but those reports could not be immediately confirmed.

"We are still assessing the effects of the attack," Valve director of marketing Doug Lombardi told Reuters in an email. "At this time, we have no further details we can share regarding the theft nor its impact on the release of Half-Life 2."

The game is to be published by Vivendi Universal Games, the video game arm of Vivendi Universal, and a VU Games spokeswoman said their official stance on the game and its status was the same as Valve's.

VIVENDI POSITION UNCLEAR

Valve controls the project and Vivendi has in past refused to say when the game would be released, although a French newspaper on Tuesday quoted a senior VU Games official as saying the game had been delayed.

"A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game," VUG's president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told Les Echos.

A source familiar with VU Games' operations said that the April release date was not firm because the company did not have any clear information on the subject from Valve.

Any delay would be seen as bad news for VU Games, which suffered a 29-percent fall in revenue and an operating loss of 52 million euros in 2003's first half and had been betting on swift holiday sales.

A delay, if true, would be the second time the game's release has been postponed. It had originally been slated for Sept. 30, but Valve said in late September it was set for an "unspecified holiday release."

The game was keenly awaited after last May's games industry trade show, E3. Critics previewing it said it brought a new level of realism to characters and the virtual world in which they move.

The original "Half-Life," released in 1998, is still popular among PC gamers, and a modified version called "Counter-Strike" is widely used in gaming competitions.

"Half-Life 2" stars Gordon Freeman, a scientist battling aliens from the planet Xen in a mysterious European locale known only as City 17.

Wow, that sucks. I am gonna be mad if they don't release it till April. I should have waited to buy my vid card. By that time my 9600pro will be obsolete... or, maybe, just not as good.

i don't think HL2 will ever come out. i think they just made a demo and had no intention of making a full game.

it's all lies!

how did this unfold exactly?
did the hackers tell the world via www that they stole the code (and post it??), or did valve find out "o shit, theres someone jacking code!" somehow?

I guess they started investigating when they found out that someone was letting people download it.

I think one of the random statements mentioned that the person that was infected (the name escapes me for the moment) noticed that someone checked his email between the times that he did and they traced from there. They found out someone copied code from the code tree using logs, etc. They also saw people posting the source online.

Apparently they also stole enough other assets to create a build of the game to release (and they did it too)

shiet
sounds like "o shit, theres someone jacking code!" is how it went down lol

i was just reading someplace they used lots of prgms, one of which hid the processes from the user on the computer, and thats how they went undetected for a whlie...

but shit, busted by reading email hahaha...for some reason i find that hacking into the system wasnt the downfall, it was reading the guys email that was, a bit amusing...but i guess it probably needed to be done, to make sure theres no codeupdates/wathever sent via email

how long was the jacked-code-release online before taken offline, anyone know?

or how long the hackers went undetected for?

That is like, so annoying! I reckon all important servers should use apple OS's, you always hear the virus expert guys say 'this virus does not affect macs'. Besides, in the news report, it said ' flaw in a Microsoft Corp. program '. Ha!

More news(from csnation)

More leaks related to the initial source code/VALVe leak has come out. Here's what Fragmaster from Planet Half-Life says, since I'm not very eloquent:
Well, it appears that this "Anonymous Leaker" character wasn't bluffing, because now he's apparently released something that lets you play Half-Life and Counter-Strike using Half-Life 2's source engine. And he's also supposedly released an outdated build of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (it's going gold Friday, see yesterday's story) and/or possibly something that deals with Counter-Strike 2. We really don't care to know the details, and we can't exactly confirm this because we refuse to download these releases ourselves. And we of course strongly suggest you don't download any of this stolen material either.
I'm guessing that VALVe had something up its sleeve concerning a port of CS to the new Source (HL2) engine, unless someone coded themselves a port (which seems unlikely). Cool, a free surprise from VALVe ruined by some dork. And man, you have to admit that VALVe really deserves to have their free updates to the community spoiled!

Of course, we here at CS-Nation would agree with the sentiment that downloading anything like this is pretty pointless. Hey, you know, I'm a pretty big fan of CS/HL and even I can wait until the stuff is final. Heck, games are about fun. It's pretty hard to enjoy a game when it has silly debug messages running across the screen. "DEBUG 2293ms WORSHIP NEWELL!! -LOMBO & BASKETHEAD" really kills the mood of a game. I don't think there is much point in downloading the leaks of the games because they're just not playable. They can't be fun.

If you want to read more about the HL2/source code leak check out GameSpy's article: What's Next for VALVe and Half-Life 2? The article has a lot of reactions from the professional development community.

Those fucking idiots. Im usually all for hacking stuff but there are fucking ethics to it! Some people just don't know when to stop, now they've ruined it for the rest of us. and I hate it when people say "o well they shouldve released the game sooner" fuck that! It's their game! not ours! We have no right to complain about when they release their games. We arn't the ones putting in all our time and effort into making quality games. If you want a game realesed on a date set by you, then make your own fucking game.

Might have something to do with the price? THe fact that you can't just buy yourself an Apple case and make a Mac the way you want? The OS, the company, your friend Jim(sorry, I can't think of much else) :P

i love macs....

im just too cheap to buy one, when i can buy an equally performing PC for a couple thousand less

but if i had the chance i'd get a mac in a heartbeat.

aye that the fact they don't offer upgradeable macs...you'd have to buy a new one to upgrade it....which is why PCs ROCK!

true, but i'd only buy a mac notebook, in which case you'd never be looking for an upgradable notebook anyway.

only problem is those little 12" mac laptops get hot as blazes

actually i think macs are the hardest to hack into...

something vague about techtv holding a "hacking contest" a while back comes to mind....1 mac box, 1 windoze box, and ip publicly given out. Each box had latest updates n stuff. Basically the point was to i guess point out how ez windoze was to hack into compared to mac i think...or, if that wasnt the point, it did end up being the outcome...

amen brotha. that is the main reason i dislike macs. that, and games are next to impossible to find for macs.

but then again, driver issues aren't such a big deal when you only have one company making all the components.

i think i remember something about FreeBSD being the most secure OS actually..

i'm sure macs are more secure than windows computers, though.. i mean more people have windows computers, so there are more known exploits..

i think i remember something about FreeBSD being the most secure OS actually..

It is the most secure free os on the market..there hasnt been a security vulnerability in the kernel since version -cant remember off the top of my head- ..there has only been vulnerabilitys in the software that is placed on the freebsd kernel
