I formatted a little over a week ago and my computer ran perfect until last night when it started to have this problem again...
Basically, what happens is when I go to shut the computer down (via start menu) it will close apps etc and then go to the shut down screen... but it doesn't ever get past that shut down screen. Anyone ever hear of this problem before? Know how to fix? Right now I have to hit the power button manually if I want to turn it off.
The wierd thing is, before I left for CES, I had no problems. When I got back (it was not used at all while I was gone), it had this problem...
The first thing I would look for is a virus. It is also possible that you have a file that is just not being closed properly. What OS are you running?

Mine used to do this and I do recall finding a fix at some point, but I believe mine fixed itself. Had something to do with my mouse somehow I had discovered after much observation and then one day it just went away...

found the problem... its ccApp.exe
heres an excerpt from norton's site (showed up when i searched google for ccapp.exe)
"ccApp is an important part of the protection that Norton AntiVirus (NAV) or Norton Internet Security (NIS) provides and should not be disabled at startup.
ccApp.exe is the common hosting application that is used by both NAV and NIS. It is responsible for calling the different program features in NAV and NIS. For example, in NAV, if Auto-Protect and Email Scanning are enabled, then ccApp.exe makes sure that those programs are running. If ccApp is disabled, then Auto-Protect and Email Scanning will not run.
If you have already disabled ccApp.exe, then follow the steps in the document Auto-Protect does not load after installing Norton AntiVirus and then restarting the computer to re-enable the program."
Apparently norton is being a bastard to my computer just cuz it feels like it... oh well, now i know to end that task before shut down at least =) Not the perfect solution but its a solution...
sounds like the people at norton need to do a little bit more testing of their software!

Wasn't drivers because I tried new ones but I have seen the Norton problem also, on my brother's computer a while back. But his fixed itself after a while as well.

you installed knoppix?
isnt that the distro that runs of a cd?

yea but i set up the .iso file on the hard drive and it boots from it instead of me having to have the cd everytime.
although i must say, i do prefer fedora to knoppix. phlak is a pretty good cd bootable distro as well. mandrakemove is alright, but my problem with mandrake is that it doesn't go through as much testing as other distros do. nevertheless i do have mandrake 9.2 installed on this machine on a dualboot.
