Don't know if Tech Support is the place for this, anyway. I have two very nice stereo speakers, but the stereo is dead due to failed modding. And the speakers on one of my computers suck, so I was wondering if it was possible to make the stereo speakers work on a computer. Yes Ive tried Google.
edit: the speakers are the kind that have little wire things that plug into clamp like things, lol can you tell I don't know anything about speakers?
Dude, you modded speakers yet you know nothing about them? Geez!
Anyway, I'm not totally sure how speakers work, but I think if you can get an audio jack from somewhere and wire the two bits of wire properly (www.howwtuffworks.com you can find stuff out about speakers), and plug it in, it might work. Although, you'll probably have to turn the volume up reeeeeaaaaallly high to get them to work, most medium size speakers need lotsa power, that's why you have an AC adapter (I think)...

get an amp and wire that stuff up
the output from most, if not all, sound cards is WAY too low...hence why computers speakers have built in amps.

if you have a standard stereo amplifier/receiver unit, you could probably make it work just by simply inputting your computer sound output into the receiver.
like killah said, you need an amp. not unlike a car stereo, the sound info is sent from the radio/cd/computer unit to the amp which powers the speakers and amplifies the sound. passive speakers with no amp will do nothing.
something like this (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?MSCSProfile=745D84CBF04D14A48AA6FF9C89 D722C0BA68C1B04FE384678A5285FCD6E056B17AF21627FDAB E316B90B3C038D68EBD6B7F9F3BD1712EAA9951ACB2590A05C 6517EFE46941FEFDD1985D4EFD6321F5E70B4DE9B6C1D45512 DCD9FB3DBCACB9478790C70A89DED275224516B8AE9BA0F1E5 F7C6F2D3FBE3DC30DC783823AE16D58DE5CB0B3D4E76E2&cookie%5Ftest=1&catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=31-5000) would work. but only if you really want to keep your speakers. otherwise, i would just spend $40 on a new set of computer speakers and be done with it.

yep u can do this two ways.
1. buy a 3.5mm headphone jack to 2xrca adaptor cable, then u can buy these two lil speaker wire to rca adaptors, this works but you will hav very low output as said above.
2. buy the 3.5mm headphone jack to rca adaptor, and also purchase an amplifier, then juz plug ur speakers in, and the rca etc and it will all run sweet.
hope this helps.

Kurtis, are you saying that the people who join our forums are dumb and can't help anyone out when they first join? That is horrible! Why do any people support a site run by people like you? I am on strike against TTL!

it's just nice to see, cuz most people just ask a question with their first post, he actually went through the trouble of signing up to help someone. brings a tear to my eye :D

if you really want to use stereo speakers with a computer, simply plop down just even a little bit of money ( depending on if you want stereo, prologic, or even the ability to do DD/DTS from your PC ) , on a receiver, which can also act as an amp, and will just need to get like a 3.5 to RCA adapter, this is pretty much what I do with my computer
Analog Hookup (thru the prologic, i'm still able to get the full surround provided the game support systems similar to prologic stereo seperation)
Computer -> 3.5-RCA adapter -> DVD Anlog input on my Onkyo Receiver
Digital Hook up Same as above except use an optical cable to the optical digital hook up of the receiver, the way i got it setup, if something starts streaming AC3 thru the SPDIF output the receiver automatically kicks into digital mode, then kicks back into analog ( stereo/prologic ) mode.
Far as speakers go, I still gota get my center and subwoofers replaced, they're my original JVC theatre in a box speakers, replaced the receiver with an Onkyo TX-DS484 ( you can probally get these for 200$ or less now days ), replaced the front L/R speakers with some older Bose Model 100s, and my rear speakers are 12" Floor standing 3-way KLH speakers I got for like 130$ at best buy brand new.
