Here is the given - I have an Altec Lansing 5.1 Surround Sound speaker system, 27" RCA TV, Xbox. At the house I previously lived at a month ago all systems were go. I had great sound and had no problems.

Now, upon moving - I finally set up my Xbox, TV, speakers. Now I also have a Direct TV receiver in the mix. Here is the problem. After hooking everything up - all I can get is stereo sound - both R and L speaks. When I put it into Surround all I get is the middle speaker. I have done the remote test and all speakers kick in. I have reconfigured the wires every way and still I cannot get any Surround at all. At one point I had the Red and White wires go directly into the Direct TV receiver and had amazing Surround - yet nothing when I turned on the Xbox. I have even unplugged everything and set it up the way it was pre Direct TV and had the same sound problems. The only other thing I can think of is that something is wrong with the Subwoofer where everything plugs into. If anyone can give me a step by idiot step on why I am unable to get anything going - please help me out.

thank you in advance

This may sound stupid, and I'm sure you already checked, but did you make sure the Xbox was still set up for surround? I had the same problem and that was what fixed it in the end.

for some reason i may have lapse memory - but how do you set up the xbox with surround - is that done with the xbox at its main menu? because i have tried that repeatedly and it only allows me to set up the video aspect not the audio aspect -

thanks

In the main menu go to settings then to audio then select the surround mode that fits your system, which should be dolby surround.

ok - now i know why i didnt set up the audio portion on the systems for the xbox - the option to choose audio is missing on my xbox dashboard - i have already tried to contact xbox support but i haven't had any response yet - all i have is xbox live, music, memory and video - what the hell happened to my audio option - weird. if you have insight let me know what to do - thanks for your previous responses

You should have a settings menu on the main dashboard menu. On both my Xbox's it's arranged like so: Memory, Music, Xbox Live, Settings. In the settings I have Clock, Language, Audio, Video, Network Settings, Auto Sign-in, Parental control, Auto Off, System Info. I don't see any reason why yours should be different unless you installed a mod chip and overwrote the dashboard somehow. I'm not sure it's gonna help but maybe a call to the support line would help.
