I have an Aspire X-Sonic case and an MSI K8N Neo Platinum mobo. For some reason, my front 1394 port refuses to work. I've checked the position of the pins on the mobo twice, so I don't know what's causing the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

make sure you're not attaching the Firewire cable to the USB pins... just off the top of my head... (that idea... not the USB pins... cause... you know... I don't have USB pins sticking out of my head... I'm not out of the matrix... yet... and besides... I'd look pretty stupid if I did have USB pins sticking out at random places... although they don't really have to be random... if you come to think of it... they could be in a really neat spot... like... a stealthed USB port... hidden behind the right eyebrow... or hidden discretely behind the left ear lobe... .... .... I'll go have lunch now...)

EDIT: Grammer check!

As with any device on a motherboard, make sure it is enabled in the BIOS to begin with. The other option might be to check and make sure your connectors are all in good condition and tight.

heh, plug the firewire into the usb port... We had a guy do that here, you would definitely know you did something wrong since the voltage pins are different. The cable quickly started smoking and the coating burned off. No permanent harm to the board but it sure smells bad.

My bets on the BIOS like Rich said, but if you can borrow a firewire header from someone else you should try that. A friend might have a pci-bracket style one that came with their board. Or Circuit City always accepts returns ;) Try to get one thats a full jumper block as opposed to seperate pins, that way you are sure to have the correct pinouts.

Well, I fixed the USB, thanks for the tip about unplugging pin 10 -- that solved the problem. But I still can't figure out what's wrong with the firewire. I'm almost sure I have the pinouts correct and I checked stuff in the BIOS, although I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for. Any ideas?
