Hello,
My video card is an NVIDIA Ge Force2 MX/MX 400 and I recently updated the drivers to play the BF2 demo. When I click on the demo icon from my desktop it acts as if it wants to start, but then the demo shots down again and the screen goes back to my desktop..nothing happens after that..
One thing though..after I installed the demo it said I needed 30 something mb of free space from my C Drive, but I have 26GB of free space??!! WTH??
My system:
Win XP Home edition version 2002
Pentium 4 / 1.50GHz / 256 MB of RAM

sounds like driver problems... and your video card might not be able to handle it... and your ram might not quite be enough... especially if you're running windows XP
Yeah, WinXP is pretty slow on systems with <512 MB of RAM unless it is properly tuned. I am not certain, but I think the Geforce2 is below the system requirements.

The GeForce2 is not on the list of officially supported video cards. So chances are that's your problem.
I had a system similar to that one when I first started gaming, it would even lag while playing RtCW during some of the bigger explosions :P
Computer gaming is a pretty expensive hobby if you want to keep playing the latest games like BF2 so I'd recommend upgrading your system.

1) GeForce2 MX/MX400, as pointed out by other forum members, is not on the list of supported cards for BF2. This is a very old card, and BF2 is a very demanding game. Your entire system sounds like it would need big upgrades (not video only) to be able to handle such a game. The CPU is pretty low-end and 256MB of RAM is hardly sufficient for even non-gaming applications these days.
2) You ask about the 30MB of free space required by the game and then mention that you have 26GB of free space... i don't think you're reading your own question, because 30MB is much less than 26GB, so that is clearly not the problem. 1GB = ~1,000MB.
Hope that answers your questions.

Yes, I did find out yesterday at an EA forum that BF2 is not compatible with NVIDIA video cards, even with the new ones..everyone at the forum with great up to date systems that had those VCs were pretty much fed up about the issue, but seems that nothing could be done; unless you'd get another card or upgrade the system as you guys mentioned.
Psychosnowman, I wasn't caliming anything by my user name, no need for flaming..that's simply a nick I chose to join this forum.
Kurtis,
Yes, I know 1 GB is 1000 mb, but that's what came up on my screen when I tried running the BF2 demo.
Thanks for the help guys, I guess I won't be able to play this great game unless I upgrade my system...PC gaming is an expensive hobbie:-(

You are incorrect, BF2 is not incompatible with all NVIDIA cards, I don't know who told you that but they have no idea what they're talking about. You are going to have the same problem whether you are using a really old ATI video card or a really old NVIDIA card. WHen it comes to gaming, you have to be at least somewhat up-to-date to play bleeding-edge games. Being 4 or 5 generations behind means you probably won't get to play today's latest games.
Regarding the capacity issue, I'm not really sure what your question was if you know the difference between MB and GB. Was it an error you saw or simply something telling you the space required was X amount?
But yeah, I don't think you'll be able to game unless you upgrade. But, you can put together a decent low-end system these days for pretty cheap (get the cheapest athlon64 and a decent nforce4 motherboard and then a mid-range PCI-E video card like the x800 xl or 6800gt.

Sorry, I didn't mean to flame you with that post it just sort of came out wrong when I wrote it.
Anyways, is your disk divided into partitions? And are you using more than one drive? If you don't have enough space cleared on the same drive/partition that Windows is installed on you might be coming up against problems with your virtual memory.

i would say that's just to get it to run... nothing about getting it to run at playable levels

I saw this game and played it at my friend's house the other day and I'm hooked..it's freaking awesome.
Anyways, I got me a new GeForce 5500, but now I need more memory. I only have 256 RAM on my system. Would you guys recommend buying a 512mb RAM memory or simply another 256 RAM to add up to the needed 512RAM?
honestly I think you would be better off just buying 1 Gig of RAM. Should only cost ya around $70-$80 and will make a world of difference.

I had 256mb + 512mb I bought yesterday that should be enough..
I was able to play the game with the new GeF 5500, but it's kinda slow at times, on sound and gameplay..
I found out I'm running on 133 frequency:-( my PC is 4 years old ..today's PCs are running on 3200. I think that's my main problem..
I spent $200 on the game, memory and the VC, and finally I want to upgrade the frequency, but sounds like it'd be better to sell my old PC and buy a whole new system up to date..
Can the frequency be upgraded? Opinnions? Thanks for the help..

Yeah frosty..I think I really do need one, but as I said, I already spent over $200 on the iitems yesterday..what do you recommend I do?
If you are running 133 RAM you are pretty much out of luck with that system. You would need to buy a new system. You could get away with just a Mobo, chip and RAM, but depending on how old your HD was you would introduce a bottleneck there. So yes, sounds like and a upgrade.

perhaps a 2nd hand mobo & cpu might be the way to go...

ooo being one on a tight budget like yourself i think i can help you out
MSI 6800 PCI E 16x (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127179) or you can get a EVGA 6600gt PCI-e 16x (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130214) it has open GL and you can add a second 6600gt if you want when you need a little more performence later on this year same with that 6800....
Abit kn8 sli (one from midrange buyers guide) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127225)
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0 ghz) you can always oc to 2.4 or something XD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103535)
i recommend that you upgrade slowly but you must buy all three of these at once before you can run them. you can do what i did and buy the video card what a month (>_<) and then buy the proccesser and mobo......then later on add more ram a better hardrive you problably dont need a new case a powesupply can wait until you upgrade to SLI (if you do which i am assumming you will)
