counterstrike = the multiplayer part of half-life... where you are a group of swat / sas / whatever that go in and prevent terrorists from blowing up places / shooting hostages / whatever... or, of course, you can play the other side and do the blowing up places / shooting hostages / whatever...

very popular in net cafe's and anyone that has broadband is almost guaranteed to have it...

The newest one is counterstrike source which is the muliplayer part of HL2, its a fantastic game, you get it free if your buy half-life2 (you would probably love this game!)

You can pick up the older version counterstrike for less than £20 maybe less than £10 now.....

yes, but you have at least heard of counterstrike. and just the mere mentioning of the word can heal wounds and cure certain types of cancer. your life is richer just for having been aware of CS. those of us that actually play it have become immortal, however.

i'm down for a TTL CS:S match. we'd have to meet up in a voice chat or something to coordinate a server location.

Kurtis
02-02-2006, 07:18 PM
i would kick your arses in CS:S. i don't have a mic, though. every new headset i've tried is really uncomfortable...

it would be cool to have a TTL game server and 'clan' just for fun, but i don't have a lot of time to play lately. i used to play every day, that was like a year ago.

blackjet
02-03-2006, 07:49 AM
To be fair, you probably would, im not very good, but i've wanted to be part of a clan for ages. It would be good to have a TTL clan caus it would just be for fun, some ppl get way too competative online which is silly!

Kurtis - would The TechLounge be able to donate some server resources? or would we all have to chip in to fund it?

Frosty
02-03-2006, 08:18 AM
i would gladly chip in XD....but i would get my ass kick just got the game recently so i kind of suck but when it comes to BF2 i own

I don't have CS:S :( of course I probably wouldn't play it much as I find BF2 a lot more enjoyably. :-D

Brian

He wishes! I've seen him play :-P
I will say he is better than me though ;-)

We have considered getting a gaming server before, but money has been tight.

Kurtis
02-03-2006, 11:23 AM
well, we'd have to get a separate server to host games on, we couldn't put that on our current server.

i'm not sure how everyone chipping in for it would work, if someone didn't chip in one month we'd have to pick up the slack, and as brian mentioned, money has been tight lately.

i've tried before to get someone to sponsor a game server for us, but that didn't work out. if anyone has a spare box with a great connection or has a friend at a hosting company, let us know and we can try to get something going.

Dyrewolph
02-03-2006, 05:26 PM
how much are we talking about in order to get a server running?

the man
02-03-2006, 07:35 PM
Shoot it have dail-up!

Rich
02-03-2006, 10:42 PM
For a public CS:S game server for 20 people, the cost runs about $30-40/month. Clans are an interesting beast to say the least.

Dyrewolph
02-04-2006, 02:22 AM
yeah but how much to actually set up the server?

Rich
02-04-2006, 09:06 AM
For a dedicated box http://www.artofwarcentral.com/main.asp?page=dedicated&cid=5

Most of the game hosting companies have servers running, usually multiple games on the same machine.

Dyrewolph

If we went the 6 month option and paid in advance, I'd be willing to pay a portion... just need to find out how many people would also be up for it. I have a paypal account so I can transfer funds already. We'd get the 10% discount as well, and I think we could cancel if we no longer use it after that 6 months?

So how many people would be willing to use it?

handrail

Clans are an interesting beast to say the least.

you can say that again!

the man
02-05-2006, 08:30 AM
does it still play fast with dail-up?

CTM420
02-05-2006, 10:24 AM
I played games online six hours a day, but five years ago. Now I occasionally play LAN games with friends.

I don't think a specific clan is a good idea, except for you real tight TTL guys maybe, but that should be seperate from any server you run, in terms of the administration. You could get people to pay $20-30 each and about 15-20 people, then it's easy to set up a server.

the man:

No, dial-up will be very slow. It used to be possible with a dial-up connection to get OKAY speeds on close-by servers on the internet using the WON service, but now Valve is using their own system (Steam!!!!), and it's next to imposssible. You won't be able to connect to a game in most cases with dial-up, and I recollect the good old "Warning Connection Problem." Uh... yeah thanks, like I didn't know that already when all the entities in the game just disappeared...oh wait, CL_FlushEntityPacket.....Ah HA!!! That was it. Oh wait...

Your connection to the server has timed out.

Valve and their Steam powered content delivery system is in my opinion, the most annoying tard-ass crap I have ever experienced on my machine, and I personally want to punch Gabe Newell in his ovaries everytime Steam fails to find my internet connection, or half-life crashes on exit, arrrrggghhh. You see I have a personal experience with the Half-Life game. Bought it on day two of it's release, playing it since. I loved Half-Life, up until Steam. The original game isn't ruined, I'm not saying that, but they definitely upgraded the required system specs to play the game without changing their readme.txt file for one thing, and the fluff in Steam really frickin gets to me. I like clean and simple and Steam is fat and bloated. To be fair, it has gotten better, but only if you consider a little more bloat "better."

Now, yes I know I can still install without using Steam from an original Half-Life disc, but then I can't play any of the newest mods and won't receive updates to the code base that could fix incompatabilities, blah, blah, I'm just advocating here. Half-Life 2 is kind of a piss poor game IMO, but Counter-Strike:Source is a great use of Valves Source engine, wicked fun game, and the bot's are great too. So is Day of Defeat, which kind of annoys me too (surprised?), since I played that back in the beta 1.3b days, but that's a pretty crazy WWII game, if your not sick of those already. But wheres Team Fortress 2? Will they EVER make that?

i honestly don't see much point in getting a game server set up. i don't think our active forum community is large enough to keep a server full in the first place. disregarding that, myself and brian would hardly ever play on the server since we're usually busy with TTL stuff whenever we have spare time. add to that the fact that brian hates counter-strike and wouldn't be caught dead playing it, nor would he (or me for that matter) want TTL funds to be used for a gaming server.

At this point in time, it would make more sense for those of you who want to play together to agree on a public server to play on. Perhaps occasionally we can arrange to play together at the same time, but I don't think that would be very often.

Yep! I agree with you post Kurtis, i don’t think there are enough of us to warrant having our own server, we simply wouldn’t use it enough. Why don’t we just agree to have a TTL - insertnamehere screen name and meet up where ever we like?

bothersome

Serious Sam 2 has some great co-op in it! I also guess BF2 could be considered co-op.... WoW may also somehow be considered co-op...

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but System Shock 2 has co-op. It's old and might be a little tough to get running, but it's got loads of atmosphere going for it. Just make sure you get all the cheat codes because the way your weapons degrade over time is just annoying as hell.

I was just going to mention system shock 2. we played the heck out of that game. it had some networking issues as i recall though. really fun game, great co-op with different character class choices.

I know X-Men Legends II - Rise of Apocolypse and Stars Wars Battlefront II both have co-op modes for XBox.

hmm... gauntlet legend (old school classic), xmen rise of apocolypse (fun reminds me of diablo2 with superpowers), Contra for the NES (can never top that game, played til i had blisters), lol Counterstrike is the epitome of the multiplayer experience.

Guild Wars has a lot of co-op missions in it, since your talking about co-op games here. I would recommend it.

I can vouch for GW. I play it too and it does have a lot of cooperative play.

Why are you making jokes and laughing about Serious Sam? I played Serious Sam and it rocked! One of the best games I ever played, and the co-operative play in it was awesome too.
