"The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights advocate, issued a warning to consumers about using an enhancement to Google Desktop that stores copies of the contents of their hard drives on the search company’s servers. The startlingly stern warnings came shortly after Google announced a new feature on Thursday that allows users to search the contents of one computer from a second computer.
In order to achieve that end, Google Desktop, the application in question, stores the contents of one computer on Google’s servers so that a user can search those files from his or her second computer. The EFF urged consumers not to use the feature called “Search Across Computers” because it makes their personal data vulnerable to government subpoena, private litigants, and hackers.
“Coming on the heels of serious consumer concern about government snooping into Google’s search logs, it’s shocking that Google expects its users to now trust it with the contents of their personal computers,” said EFF Staff Attorney Kevin Bankston. "
