AI - The future of traffic? (http://www.thetechlounge.com/news/9906/AI+The+future+of+traffic/)

"Java applet simulates a perfect meshing of a 6-lane bi-directional 4 way traffic intersection where the delay per car is about .076 seconds, compared to ten seconds on average for a perfectly optimal stop light. Demonstrates what could be done with AI-controlled traffic flow."

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't feel too comfortable going through an intersection like that... lol. I'm all for technology, but I'd feel more comfortable if the cars had more distance between them or something. Scary.

Won't be any more dangerous than the intersection by your house ;-)

I agree. There would definitely have to be a certain amount of distance to account for things such as blowouts since vehicles are not completely reliable. Also, it might be rather hard to account for road conditions (ice, etc.) which could vary constantly.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see this happen with such impeccable timing and the safety it boasts, but I don't see that happening any time soon. The first steps towards this would be exciting to see, though. Even if it may not be as efficient as possible, there's a possibility that it'd be better than the way we're set up now - in non-metropolitan areas at least.

lol. A.I. i don't trust them. the zombie bots in Counterstrike source scare me enough already. get AI controlling our streets, and mysterious problems might start occuring. one of the reasons why i dont want to visit korea is that they have that "1 robot for every home by 2010" thing. i swear kim jong il is a robot and he's influencing the south korean government through some sort of subliminal control. then again i'm just afraid of giant blood sucking robots.
