I am looking for a working model of the following

IBM Deskstar
Model IC35L060AVVA07-0
7200 RPM
P/N 07N9209

61.4 GB Hard drive

I would even be willing to swap out my working Maxtor 80GB drive for one. PM me if you think you might want to get rid of one.

Thanks

Let me guess, you suspect dead electronics on one of those?

This fully functional death star will be more powerful than the first!!

Yeah, the HD is truely messed up, I can hear it spinning, but when plugged in it stops the machine from booting. I am hoping to replace the electronics and have it work long enough to get some information off of it. If it isn't the electronics, I will be doing a hardware transplant. All else fails I can't recover anything and I am still where I started.

Are you sure that you can replace the electronics without damaging the drive (further)? I guess you probably have tried to take it apart already. Well, I hope you get lucky with ebay or something.

Luckily, the logic board is a straightforward process ( I hope). Hopefully I can find one with similar firmware. I am hoping not to have to crack the thing open, but if it gets my stuff back, then so be it.

Just an update, I was able to find the correct drive on ebay, swapped the logic board, and recovered all information. It was if the drive didn't have any problems. Everything was as I had left it.

The drive sounded fine, normal spin-up and everything. The problem arose during boot in which the machine would hang if the drive was plugged in. As soon as the drive was disconnected, the machine would boot normally. The swap was 4 screws and a VERY thin ribbon connector. I might take some pictures to show the process since it worked out well.

Interesting... a friend of mine called me yesterday saying he had a problem with an old computer of his. It would hang before booting up every time. Wonder if that's the problem. Haven't touched his computer yet, but I was already thinking it might be the hard drive - I just hope I can get his stuff backed up without too much hassle.

Well, you could try using a bootable CD-ROM with some sort of OS on it (I use BartPE FWIW), see if the PC boots okay when NOT using the HDD (disconnect it to be sure).
