Registration no longer required to comment (http://www.thetechlounge.com/news/11271/Registration+no+longer+required+to+comment/)
"Due to an increasing number of requests from spammers, we have decided to open up news and article comments and user reviews to anybody that can put a nickname in a form field. You can now look forward to many more spam posts, which any self-respecting website should have. As a side-effect, people who have something interesting to say can now post their thoughts without registering, but let's try to keep the constructive comments to a minimum guys..."

In all seriousness, if you abuse the system to post spam, you will be punished.
We will hunt you down, strap you to a chair, and tickle you with wet noodles. By 'we' I mean Brian. I will have no part in that.

Fibber. The macaroni massacre of '99 has your name all over it.
On a more serious note, I have seen mixed results from this. Creating an account is so easy, but you lose the chance to say what you really think (read: flame) with impunity. Most often times the criticism is not very constructive.
But here's to hope!

Well the thing is we really want to encourage people to take part in discussion, and I don't imagine it's just going to suddenly happen unless we make it easier for new people to get posting. The real problem we're going to face is spammers and finding ways to make it harder for them to take advantage of the guest access. We'll see how things go.
I don't really care if people want to flame, so long as they're participating! :-P

We did this before but stopped because of the spam. Kurtis said he would manage the spam, so that's why we're doing it again. If we actually get more comments we'll figure out how to effectively reduce the spam, if not, registration returns.
